Apple has that reputation and they are bad but there are so many companies that are way worse e. g. every single android phone maker

@xianc78 @animeirl They were never particularly out of the ordinary about it until the success of the iPhone.

@netdoll @animeirl Phones have always been meant to be replaced every ~2 years, and that is mostly due to cellular network giving you a free upgrade.

@xianc78 @animeirl Yeah, difference is nobody really tried applying the 2 year contract model to computers in earnest until Apple decided to capitalize on their success as a lifestyle brand stemming from their phones.

@netdoll @animeirl Laptops are still repairable if you buy a good one and not some shitty netbook, but anyone who isn't using a netbook, cheap laptop, or MacBook is probably a PC gamer who is naturally going to replace his gaming laptop when newer AAA games make it obsolete.

I'm actually trying to keep my current laptop for as long as possible. It's already outlasting my previous laptops and I recently replaced the fans. When the time comes, I'm either going to get a System76 or Framework.

GPU drivers will probably be a big problem

oh right ... there is that Linux project to get a kernel working on the M1 .. opposite direction, but probably still useful.

@djsumdog @xianc78 @animeirl Not that I've seen, closest would be Rosetta 2 for Linux running on non-Apple CPUs but without TSO support things would be very sus.
