I wish instead of making Earthbound-inspired RPGs, indies would make RPGs similar to the original Phantasy Star games.

@xianc78 you can make those kinds of dungeon crawlers in RPG Maker. usually it's reserved for more weird/surreal games though instead of "real" RPGs.

@beardalaxy Are you talking about the pseudo-3D dungeons? I'm just talking about the science fantasy setting.

@xianc78 yeah, the dungeons. that makes sense though lol. i can't think of any immediately off the top of my head. i'd check rpgmaker.net but they're down at the moment, experiencing some difficulties after their server host finally shut down after being on life support for years.

@beardalaxy The faux-3D dungeons are just like those faux-3D games were you just see a static, first-person image of your field of view, depending on what kind of tile you are on. The only difference is that they added an animation when moving from tile to tile instead of just showing the next image. Later games dropped it, which was for the better IMO as this method was limited to maze-like dungeons.

I remember someone trying to make a Phantasy Star V in RPG Maker but I don't think the person went anywhere with that. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a fanmade Phantasy Star V that was ever finished. The series (and I'm talking about the original series) doesn't have the same devotion as something like Earthbound where a group of people would literally spend a decade and a half making a fan-sequel that later became a spiritual successor.

I have something planned that is similar to the original Phantasy Star games, but it's not a spiritual successor because it's a Zelda clone. Also, the cast will all be aliens instead of future humans or humans from another planet. It will be Phantasy Star inspired only by the science fantasy setting.
