While it may sound overly dramatic, I think people would be well served to remember that no matter how small or how innocent a law or program may seem, sitting right behind it is death.

The power of the State is death. Sure, there are usually steps before that and all sorts of things come into play before it, but at its root, it’s death. This is easy to prove. Fail to pay your taxes. What happens? Someone shows up eventually to ask why so? Then they’ll ask you to do so. Then they’ll order you (via the courts). If you still refuse to comply, men with guns will show up and either attempt to force you or arrest you. Refuse that, they attempt to subdue you. Refuse that, they shoot you. Loop closed.

Oh, but taxes are serious business. Surely that isn’t the case for a little law like jaywalking?! Nope. 100% the same. More steps, takes longer to get there maybe, but the result is the same.

So when one says “We should create a program to do XYZ”, at the root of it one is speaking of forcing people at the point of a gun to do a thing. I’m not addressing the question of whether that thing is or isn’t a good thing. Just pointing out that all state power is force and that matters when one considers what is “compassion” when it comes from the state. To my way of thinking, compassion cannot come from force and can only come from choice. Thus, the state is only vaguely capable of such and only in those rare instances where everyone agrees to the action in question. Very rare instances. Otherwise, the state is forcing people (on one level or another) to comply and do as others want them to do.

Individuals can be compassionate. Private organizations can be compassionate. The state can only sorta approach it

@jeder I’m far from joking, and you know that damn well that all you have done is say that you have the “freedom to pay taxes for go to jail” the “freedom to obey the government or else”. Its not freedom. You just go on about which King you’ll elect, but even if you vote for your master, you are still their serf — their tax stock.

You are just comfortable being property of the state.

I just finished reading the new proposed "Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act" bill, and I can't believe you amerilards are so insistent about going full retard. These days every time I read news from over there it's always some kind of tragicomic parody of every dystopic novel ever written thrown into a blender that seems to ever expand upon itself like a milked-dry TV show with too many seasons. I do sincerely hope this kind of insane bs gets laughed straight out instead of anyone even considering the possibility, but sadly I know better than that.

This shows just how faulty left-wing thinking can be. Sure, all of that is probably true, if you ban guns, successful suicide rates are probably gonna drop drastically, but you're still not actually solving the issue. You're putting a band-aid over it.

The issue isn't the suicides, the issue is: why are so many men in USA so depressed and miserable to the point where want to be released from this mortal coil.

Banning guns as a solution to suicides is as logical as Foxconn putting safety nets around its building. Just because you deny/prevent someone from committing suicide doesn't mean they'll suddenly go looking for help for their mental problems. They're just gonna continue suffering on their own for a lot longer. Technically speaking, you're basically a sadist trying to torture them as much as possible, instead of actually trying to understand their problems and reaching out to give them a hand.

And the most absurd part of all of this, is that I guarantee you that the same person that advocated for this "solution" is probably pro-euthanasia (assisted suicide) for the terminally ill. Maybe I'm missing something, but I find this highly self-contradicting. Either you're fine with allowing people to have control over their life and death, or you're not. You can't have it both ways.

P.S. For anyone curious, I'm pro assisted suicide; and I think citing suicide rates is a terrible, completely inadmissible, argument for banning guns.
