With Lecter, Iris, and NNIA in general presenting an elevated risk for doxxing at the moment, this seems like a good time to remind everyone to be safe out there. Don’t assume anything you post in the Public, Unlisted, or even Followers Only scopes is hidden from the prying eyes of antis. In addition to just NNIA threats, there have also been reports in the past of some fediverse instances changing the scopes on federated posts to make them all public - scope isn’t security, and not all instances even require accounts to see posts either!

Bearing these factors in mind, be cautious what you reveal about yourself, your personal life, and your relationships on the fediverse. The best practice is to just assume that everything here is or could become public at any point. If you wouldn’t post it with any random person able to click a link and see it, you probably shouldn’t post it here either.

These are especially stressful times, but let us not forget that the only significant difference now is now we’re aware of a lurking threat in NNIA. The potential for threats like this has always been there in the technology, and it’s an unavoidable part of the fediverse. So let’s take the warning to heart, and do the best we can to keep ourselves and each other safe!
