One thing that seemed really simple to me, but I haven't seen any friends with kids do, is punish their kids in a way that respects their autonomy. Like, flat out, regardless of the situation, before you punish anyone, regardless of age, regardless of what they did, you should fucking talk to them. Again, seems simple, but you see a lot of shitty parents not do it. Ask them why they did what they did, to figure out if they even need a punishment in the first place.
