our recommendation for guidance style is 'collaboration as partners', 'depersonalized natural consequences', and 'responsive care'
you do not want the walls of the home to be covered in crayon. you communicate the need to keep crayons on paper as clear as you can, that no one is permitted to draw on the house's walls. but the youngest may test such boundaries. if they draw on the wall, you may take whatever time you need to release your personal feelings about the damage and then, when you are entirely calm and ready to collaborate with your kid as a fellow member of the house, ask them to help you scrub the crayon from the wall so you can touch up the paint and repair the damage; it is not a punishment, it's simply that things are not as they should be and as a natural consequence, some work must be done to restore the home.
then, consider and respond to their needs which may help to proactively avoid having to do this again; getting them some sidewalk chalk if they didn't already have any, or installing a whiteboard or chalkboard, or just designating one of the walls of their room as the crayon-wall which can be the exception to the no-crayon-on-walls agreement. oh yea, and it should be agreed on if you can. making rules can be frustrating if you don't explain them or they aren't allowed to question them or internalize why things are this way. and be open to changing the terms in their favor as you work towards agreements; the free-reign crayon-wall could be an example of collaborating on agreements. it demonstrates respect and teaches effective self-advocacy.
