An ode to online friendship (aka fedifrens):
Oh fedifrens, my fedifrens, dear fedifrens in my home, in my phone, how you have effected me, my mental health, my brain, and in doing so caused great pain, and great pleasure, the full range of human emotions, we have cried together, we have laughed together, oh fedifrens, I mourn you who have passed, oh fedifrens, I know that online friendships rarely last, I know that if you're reading this or hearing this as well, that you're about to find out that I think you're swell.

parenthood is a broken institution, rampant with abuse. yet we still want to know how to best guide the youngest in our care.
our recommendation for guidance style is 'collaboration as partners', 'depersonalized natural consequences', and 'responsive care'
you do not want the walls of the home to be covered in crayon. you communicate the need to keep crayons on paper as clear as you can, that no one is permitted to draw on the house's walls. but the youngest may test such boundaries. if they draw on the wall, you may take whatever time you need to release your personal feelings about the damage and then, when you are entirely calm and ready to collaborate with your kid as a fellow member of the house, ask them to help you scrub the crayon from the wall so you can touch up the paint and repair the damage; it is not a punishment, it's simply that things are not as they should be and as a natural consequence, some work must be done to restore the home.
then, consider and respond to their needs which may help to proactively avoid having to do this again; getting them some sidewalk chalk if they didn't already have any, or installing a whiteboard or chalkboard, or just designating one of the walls of their room as the crayon-wall which can be the exception to the no-crayon-on-walls agreement. oh yea, and it should be agreed on if you can. making rules can be frustrating if you don't explain them or they aren't allowed to question them or internalize why things are this way. and be open to changing the terms in their favor as you work towards agreements; the free-reign crayon-wall could be an example of collaborating on agreements. it demonstrates respect and teaches effective self-advocacy.
also, scrupulously follow agreements with respect to your youngest's interpretation. now that you have established the 'no marking up the walls willy-nilly' agreement, don't you dare just start your stars-and-moons stencil project in the living room without consulting the kids first. let them know you want to put marks on the walls, explain why you think it would be an improvement to the room's aesthetic, and give them a chance to suggest alternatives or additions to the project. they are not "your walls" that you can just go marking up, remember? everyone who lives in the home abides by agreements and respects each other, so throwing those stencils up without getting the agreement of the kids first would be disrespectful. don't be a tyrant
