Yes. This is literally exactly how it works. Every time I've gotten laid, it was by doing some form of this. I was in decent shape, I tried to be polite, tried to be flirty (never was very good, but I tried), and it worked out.

The difference is that I've actually flirted with girls and had sex while doing some amount of the (get fit, get good job) stuff. As a guy with an average face and a touch of the 'tism, I know from experience that most guys can get a girl if they do the above.

If I genuinely wanted to do volunteer work I'd be doing it already.

Growing up, did you ever get that sense of satisfaction of working with people you know to improve your community? I did. While there are negatives, the "mandatory" exposure to this is one of the more positive aspects of being raised Mormon.
