Even if they do have street cred from this, if they don’t have an active agenda which they’re pushing to root out these people and ideas, it’s just going to result in a bunch of these people joining the government and pushing these ideas.

Left and right are always playing by a different rule set. And protests are good for the left, no matter how violent, until they actually serve as a demonstration of need for protection.
Then, they make the right popular.
This is an excellent analysis. The left and right operate on different rules and have not merely inverse, but totally orthogonal wincons.

They saw it as some kind of a social event. 
- They can't tolerate a single social media site allowing you to say nigger

Simple as. Their ideology is so shit, and so dependent on the absolutely worst people in existence, that any actual alternative being available will naturally become an existential threat.
