After what JJ did in Ep.7, lore masters had to figure out a way to make new republic retarded enough, to collapse within 10 years... 
They somehow did it, and it is quite halarious. On the other hand, as far as I know, noone was able to explain the rise of galactic-level army with several working superweapons yet 
.
They said, that Leia was so terrified of totalitarian government that the empire was, that when the new republic was created, they outright destroyed tbe entire military...
