Pre-Enlightenment Christianity was a total perversion of Christ's teachings that was primarily adopted and built up in order to pacify the population and prevent anyone from questioning their lords thanks to the divine right of kings. After all, if the god who will punish you forever after you died if you disobeyed him said that the jackass in that castle was there under his authority, who was in a position to argue?
