Because things should be kept easily accessible and don't require weird extra steps when nothing special is at skate.

I understand when delivery service wants my phone number because courier might need to phone me if they can't find me, negotiate delivery time etc. I understand when bank wants my ID and passport because finances are serious business.

I don't understand why internet messenger wants my phone number which is linked to my passport and private data and most likely easily greppable in leaks.

I understand that it's for "spam protection" that I don't care about (and which has better alternatives like captcha and email verification) and for "network effect" which is something i wish to avoid entirely. And obviously to sell my phone number to spammers and subscribe me to some bullshit shit on my behalf that i REALLY want to avoid.

Bottom line - I should've be going to nearest gas station and electronics store to get 2€ sim card and 10€ burner phone just to access some dumb messenger to post memes that has better alternatives that doesn't require me to spend 12€ just to access it.
