It matters less up to a point. But there is a point. Remember that the cost of something is (generally) a reflection of the amount of human effort that went into building it.

A Boeing 737 Max costs a little over $100 million. That's equal to the lifetime output of dozens of skilled workers. You let someone destroy that and you've effectively sentenced dozens of people to a life sentence to replace what was destroyed. So do we tolerate that? Or do we shoot the guy trying to destroy it even if we were somehow in a scenario where we expected his actions wouldn't result in any direct loss of life?

Obviously we don't tolerate that. And admittedly it's a contrived scenario. But how about a block of shops that are about to be looted and destroyed. How many millions in damage will that cause? That's not even getting into the question of value of the psychological damage to the community, potential economic damage from now being perceived as an unsafe place, etc.
