Studying 740 women, those with high calorie intakes when conceiving were more likely to have boys. Having fewer calories is associated with having girls.

The only category of food with a significant correlation was breakfast cereal (positive). The only correlated nutrient was potassium (also positive).

So if you want a boy, make sure she eats over 2250 calories a day, has at least 7 bowls of cereal a week, and has good potassium.

This apparently can turn the 50:50 into 55:45.

If you work out your biceps a lot, you’ll have a kid with strong biceps. When we didn’t know anything about genes that seemed like a plausible explanation too.

This wasn’t long after spontaneous generation was a common belief. People actually thought their bags of grain were spawning mice, that burning logs created salamanders, that rotting meat created maggots, etc.
