Just In: Japan suspending another million+ doses of Moderna vaccine in two more prefectures (Gunma and Okinawa) after foreign substances found in more vials. The total number of suspensions is now 2.6 million doses.
Unlike the previous contaminants, these ones are being described as "a black substance" in Gunma, and "a pink material" in Okinawa. The composition of the contaminants has not yet been determined.
A Ministry of Health spokesperson suggested the contaminants may be from rubber stoppers in the bottles, and resulted from improper needle insertion. An investigation is underway in both prefectures.
