I kinda wonder why so many people are so obsessed with Billy Mitchell. I've only heard of him because of various recent lawsuits and such. Besides the old "records", is there anything noteworthy he does that keeps him in the spotlight this much? If not, just stop talking about the moron and he'll disappear.

@Mr_NutterButter My instinct is to say "nah"... but... if I actually think about it instead... it sounds plausible.

They "stored" value in ghost cities that are uninhabited and are gonna collapse on their own because they're badly built. Look up tofu dreg to see how good Chinese buildings are.
They didn't store jack shit, because the government is 100% corrupt and incapable of actually doing anything. If you think your government is bad, multiply that by at least 10 times.
And the population doesn't store anything in China either. Any Chinese businessman worthy of the title isn't keeping his money in China, because he knows Xi will confiscate it if he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed one day.
Even if they wanted to, the common people can't store wealth in China, because you can't own shit. You don't own land or buildings in China. You only lease from the state. So the common person is not encouraged to invest in anything.

Going back to the government, at best you can expect it to store up some gold. Ok, so what? What are they gonna do with gold when shit hits the fan? Can they eat gold? You'll say "sell it". Sure, but there's only so much the market needs at any time. Try to sell too much, and the price drops, ruining your efforts to get some money to fix China. Oops. And that's not even mentioning the problem that there's always suspicion that Chinese gold is faked. So people are gonna be weary of buying it anyway.

And only a moron "stores up value" like that anyway. You "store" value by investing in enterprises and the people. But the government has done a piss poor job of that. It invested nothing in the actual population. It raised nobody out of poverty. China's way of getting rid of poverty was to redefine poverty as earning more than $100 in a YEAR.
As for industry... that's been private investors that build up China's manufacturing, not the state. And ever since Covid, manufacturing has taken a heavy hit, even worse than western economies.

China does nothing but waste money at every turn. It spends more on propaganda to tell westerners that they fixed their toilet problem, than actually spending on replacing their hole in the ground squatting toilets. They waste money on physical censorship barriers, so they can apply IRL censorship of protests or failed infrastructure, instead of spending money on solving people's problems or repairing bridges. They waste money on painting rocks green, to appear from the helicopter that they've rehabilitated a barren area, instead of actually planting vegetation.

China is the country of lies and facades. Nothing more.

YouTube is putting new features in I see. Pretty sure that's AI generated.

@WhitestTemplar @p @lanodan @hj @gentoobro @Hoss @ProfessionalPetFoodTaster @mangeurdenuage
No, the country isn't wealthy either. It maintains an outside image of wealth due to propaganda. So congrats! You're in a very exclusive club of select few people who believe Chinese state propaganda! How do you feel to be given this honor?

@Lavaearth
>psyop to make the algoritms..
doubt it. YouTube had been shadow banning her, the Honey Badgers, and probably the whole "manosphere" well before the "karen" thing became widespread. The psyop wasn't needed to steer people away from good content.

It's hard to know for sure what's going on in China, but they're likely at the plateau already, if not in a recession. Every statistic imaginable that comes out of China is a lie. So it's unlikely that they have any real economic growth (even ignoring the USA tariffs).
There are even estimates that they don't actually have 1 billion people. And since they know have a worse birthrate than the west, they're actually headed for one of the worst population collapses in the world, on top of all the other problems they have.
China is gonna be entertaining to watch in a few decades time. For now, they're still cooking.

@WhitestTemplar @p @lanodan @hj @gentoobro @Hoss @ProfessionalPetFoodTaster @mangeurdenuage
Lol, no. It's government fucking them for almost a century, first and foremost. Taiwan has the exact same genetics, and they're doing damn well for themselves.
Could Taiwan be even richer? Sure. But with a small island, and limited resources at their disposal, they've done very well.

@Xeniax I feel sympathy for them and Denys, but Putin isn't gonna listen to a petition. I'd want to believe there's a chance that if they get the ear of world leaders instead, and have them pressure Putin, maybe there's a chance of something happening... but honestly I don't really see that either.
I guess the parents are searching for hope, but I don't see this endeavor being more than false hope. And following false hope just wastes time. And considering he's getting tortured, time is limited.

@a1ba I think it's a consequence of the medium.
I think games are the next stage of art after movies. So adapting a game to a movie is like adapting a movie to a book. It cannot translate well, because a game can do things that a movie can, just like a movie can do things that a book can't.

@a1ba There was a time when a Half-Life movie sounded like an interesting prospect, though one that was bound to be at best as good as the Resident Evil movies.
Then came the period of time when it was clearly a bad idea, so I just didn't want it.
Now I live in an era where am I deeply terrified of the possibility of this happening. Please, for the love of all that is holy, please don't do this... Please Valve, Gaben... please protect Gordon Freeman from Amazon, Netflix and Hollywood. Don't let them rape my boy!

@Xeniax
You do realize this petition won't do anything, right? Unless you're petitioning either EU or USA to begin a full scale war with Russia, a petition has no power against the Russian government. You can gather a billion signatures, and it won't get your friend released. So why are you doing this, besides attention seeking?

@ProfessionalPetFoodTaster @p @lanodan @hj @Hoss @gentoobro @mangeurdenuage
If you mean China, on the contrary. China is comprised entirely of the weak. The population is weak to rise up, and Xi is weak because he needs to rule as a dictator for anyone to follow him.

@ProfessionalPetFoodTaster @p @lanodan @hj @Hoss @gentoobro @mangeurdenuage
Oh no, it is. They censor more than they ever did. They use more propaganda on its own population that they spread externally. They still take political prisoners. They still torture. Use dissidents for organ harvesting. They don't roll out the tanks because they haven't had a need to. But they still beat up any small protest that might appear. And they do happen from time to time.
And Xi is slowly reintroducing Mao's ideology and way of doing things. So it's only gonna get worse. He's been getting rid of anyone opposing him from the party. Replacing military generals with loyal ones.

@suika I feel like there might be too many people here that know how to fix something like that.

@ProfessionalPetFoodTaster @p @lanodan @hj @Hoss @gentoobro @mangeurdenuage
Tiananmen Square, June 4th, 1989.

I do love it that you don't even need to try to describe to a Chinese person what happened in that day. You just say the date, location, and maybe post a picture of a random tank, and they'll disappear.
