And here I thought that online stores that constantly have 50% off sales are just shady!

@olmitch @coolboymew bro 3 of my friends got duped by some lightsaber scam website because of that xD

@olmitch @coolboymew they showed these pictures of amazing lightsabers on the website and they all had different designs for each character. They were like 80% off or something and still $45. So they all bought them and they turned out to be all exactly the same cheap plastic, tiny rave lightsabers that changed color when you hit them on something xD they even had a strobe mode xD

When they were explaining it to me I was like oh, that's cool. I have no interest in star wars but good for them. Then the packages actually came and I was like.... Oh no xD that's when I looked at the website and it was SO OBVIOUSLY A SCAM man, I swear most people really are NPCs.

Mypillow has a 40% or 50% sale going all the time but the products aren't scam, they are actually quite nice. I have the sheets, pillows, and bath towel
@olmitch @beardalaxy yeah that's kind of the marketing trick "sales all the times". On top of that they have an idiot catch in that you literally give away coupon codes all the times. It's literally what the picture talks about

The products being nice or not are irrelevant from the trick

@coolboymew @olmitch look at all these brands that advertise through youtuber sponsorships. there is always some sort of deal going on or some sort of code you can use to get them for cheaper, and even if you can find more quality for the end price somewhere else people still buy them in droves because a youtuber talked about it.

case in point: raycons.

@olmitch @coolboymew skullcandies are kind of meh too but they've got a lifetime warranty so that's the nice part.

i used to get heavily discounted skullcandy stuff because i had a friend whose uncle owned the company. so that was cool.

@beardalaxy @olmitch I once got a set of them on a groupon and they sounded on the level of dollar store headphones, I was not impressed
And then you were like THESE DO NOT PLEASE COOL BOY MEW and you summoned lighting from the heavens to destroy the offending buds

@coolboymew @olmitch the cool skullcandy stuff is the stuff with gimmicks. like the skullcrushers which have actual subs in them. or they have a hoodie with spots to put speakers inside of that zips all the way up.

if you're actually trying to get a good pair of cans though, skullcandy aint it.

Fuck yeah, I had the skullcrushers for a while, they took batteries and would bounce off the sides of my head just about. I've never been a $200 studio headphones kind of guy. I'm a tune my $30 earbuds with a software DSP kind of guy.
@olmitch @beardalaxy I'm the 40$ earbuds that's actually amazing for the price, refurb wireless samsung earbuds at a 100$+ discount and nice studio headphones kinda guy
Damn, I have the old model and they have built in Tile now, that's sick
It's the thing Apple copied when they invented Airtags basically

@coolboymew @olmitch i like stuff in the $100-$150 range that sounds really good for the price. i use an AT M40x. Didn't go for the M50x because I just like the sound of the 40 better. probably the best cans you can get for $100 and it honestly is my favorite sounding one from what i've tried. only thing i don't like about them is the pleather that has started to peel now, so i had to buy new ear cups and will have to get a cover for the band soon.

then i have a pair of aftershokz, those bone conduction things. the sound quality is obviously not going to be great, but for what they are it's still really nice. i think those were around $100 too. i use them for work and walking so i can still hear my surroundings.

@beardalaxy @olmitch I stayed with the good old same old, went with sennheiser HD 599SE
I still think the Sony ear clip headphones with the retractable cables is peak design. I just want a Bluetooth version of these. I found one for much more than I could afford once.
@olmitch @beardalaxy I dunno, it's... too 90s/00s for me?

For wired earbuds I went with Sennheiser CX 300B MK II Precision Enhanced Bass Earbuds (Black)

Of course, less good than the headphones I have, but these lasted me years and even massive abuse. Accidentally got one side holding my entire laptop bag and the only damage that happened was that the wire started curling. That was insane

For wireless I went with Samsung Galaxy Buds+ (Plus) at 100$CAD refurb. Specifically these ones because I've read reviews that they really stay in your ears and I bought them for working out (no wires) and I bring them outside too. Good purchase

@olmitch @coolboymew yeah those are fuckin nice, i had a pair a long time ago that broke when i got in a fight unfortunately :P

@coolboymew @beardalaxy @olmitch What kind? I have several sets of Skullcandies ajd while I love the 3.5mm wired earbuds, the Ink'd, and the Sesh, I absolutely DESPISE the other kinds I have, so it'd be good to know what to avoid.
@brimshae @beardalaxy @olmitch it's been too long, I tried to check on groupon but they long since deleted my account it seems

@olmitch @beardalaxy @coolboymew Wireless earbuds are a joke. I always use wired headphones with no problem.

I'm the joke when every time I get up from my desk my phone goes flying and my headphone get yanked off my head when I have corded headphones

@olmitch @beardalaxy @coolboymew I have my headphones plugged into my laptop if I'm at my desk. I don't listen to music on my phone. I have a MP3 player (yes, I still use one) when I'm away. Having wired headphones also has the benefit of using them as a FM radio antenna for some portable devices (there are still a few stations that aren't complete garbage if you know where to look).

@olmitch @beardalaxy @xianc78 @coolboymew You need to follow the 10% Rule, friend.

You need to be 10% smarter than the equipment you're using/working on.

@xianc78 @olmitch @coolboymew the aftershokz are wireless but that makes sense, i use them while working and stuff so i need full motion and for cables to not get in my way or cause issues getting caught on things.

i heavily prefer wired, though. bluetooth sucks ass.

@beardalaxy @olmitch @coolboymew Either way, I prefer headphones over earbuds and wireless headphones are fucking expensive.

@beardalaxy @olmitch @coolboymew Also, there are headphones out there with built-in MP3 players.

@olmitch @beardalaxy @coolboymew

The Dime wireless earbuds are great. I didn't know they came in colors (I got mine from a brick and mortar overstock store).

Also, the Ink'd yoke-style earbuds are great. I use them to do the dishes when everyone's asleep.

Sesh model was hot garbage. They don'y sit in the charger very well, so they are always dead. Indy model sucks because the power button never wants to register.
@beardalaxy @olmitch I knew raycons would be utter garbage. They're actually a branded version of some cheap chinese clone

An Ashens like youtuber did a review and yeah

@MasterSimper @coolboymew @olmitch a guy once tried to rope us into a real estate pyramid scheme right out of high school xD it was so obvious, he was giving us all compliments and stuff.

@beardalaxy @coolboymew @olmitch oh I knew it was a pyramid scheme joined it anyways because the soda was actually pretty good, not because I was gonna sell anything
@MasterSimper @beardalaxy @olmitch When I was desperately searching for jobs I found this realllly fucking suspicious salesman group, they had conferences and all that. The website gave me bad vibes, but it turned out they might have been legit because they did do stuff for local companies... but companies big enough to be able to hire their own employees, so, bah, one of those many shitty useless contractors middlemen companies
When I was in my late teens, I used to go by this mysterious business downtown while I was riding the bus. It had a huge vinyl decal covering the entire front door of a huge pile of cash, and some sign that said "inquire within".

I banged on that door a few times, couldn't get anyone to come. One day, the door was open. I went in, and climbed a staircase. Inside, there was an office with a couple of big conference rooms. There was a guy there with a suit and a few other people I didn't really get a good look at.

I don't remember what the man in the suit said to me, I just remember having the strongest sensation of pure evil that I've ever experienced before or since. I got the fuck out of there and never came back.
@beardalaxy @coolboymew @olmitch Just pick a big streamer or normieish podcaster and try their code. Its usually the same code across all merchants. I type "woods" in for checkout on literally everything and it registers a valid code like 40% of the time
@poastoak @beardalaxy @olmitch there's a website for coupons I forgot

But anyways, a lot of the stuff advertised by youtubers is scammish in the first place. The only thing I really kinda wanted was the protein sugarfree cereal that Whang! talks about sometimes and man, it's expensive
Retailmenot used to be a great resource, but the website is weird now
@olmitch @poastoak @beardalaxy yes, that, but it kinda got overran by, I lack the word right now, refer codes. Sometimes these do give you something, but christ
Oh Magic Spoon? Yeah they have that at Grocery Outlet lately if you wanna drive for like 3 days to get some XD
We have it locally at the discount store, yeah, so it's actually like $5 a box
I stopped eating cereal and it didn't even dawn on me to try it haha
