You get to pick and choose what features you want for most programs, which in turn gives you more control over what other packages get brought in. The fact that everything is compiled from source isn't a big deal since portage does all of the heavy lifting; the only issue being that you have to wait if you have a slower computer. It does a good job of giving you ultimate control but in a way that's easy to manage (USE flags).
