cool beans
>my raidie waidie is deddie weddie and techshrek cant fix it ;(
or something to that effect
@matrix
okay so lemme get this straight..
>set up mega storage with centOS
>dont set up automatic scrubbing
>shit starts dying
>dont add automatic scrubbing, buy new mega storage instead
>dw, we'll do it right this time
like i get they've got a good excuse to make a couple videos, using partnerships with hardware makers to get cheaper hardware.
but JEEEEESUS CHRIST
@Lumeinshin @matrix there's another thing that's worse.
> Buys new hardware
> Hopefully we will setup this week
> Doesn't turn off the old servers to preserve the rest of the data on it

He also invest tens of thousands of bucks in a UPS array to make the servers last for few hours, instead of buying enough to make them last half an hour and to put a diesel generator on site, so power loss wouldn't be a problem, they can turn on the generator and they wouldn't need to care about for the power being out for a few days

LTT has some of the worst tech people I've saw.
@matrix
again? didn't this happen half a year ago? maybe they should contract a professional non-meme storage expert to fix their setup? :akko_wtf2:
@sjw @matrix btrfs is way easier to use and has more functionality if you don't need it to be cross-platform
@caskd @matrix Yeah, I know. However, it's also Btrfs.
AFAIK Btrfs doesn't have any caching features, RAID5 and RAID6 are pretty sketchy as to data integrity and there is no RAID7.
It also has a real issue with fragmentation when compression is used.
@sjw @matrix it doesn't have anything like ARC indeed, and what you mentioned are indeed problems but other than that it works pretty well

plus you can enable autodefrag on writes if you use HDDs
@caskd @matrix Those two things are some of the most used features and are pretty important.

Sure, you can get around both of those by putting Btrfs on top of LVM but you lose some of the other features of Btrfs by doing so.

@matrix
Only thing that surprises me is that it doesn't seem like they have any off-site backup solution. That's usually considered one of the critical steps of data backup.

@alyx
He mentioned that in the video. It would be too expensive and since it's not mission critical data it's not worth it.

@matrix
Welp. I just saw the video...

I instantly checked if my zpool was doing okay. 😅
