@InderDus @matrix @InderDus @matrix That makes sense. I have indeed found 7-zip to be pretty shit in comparison to using tools like zip, pigz, pbzip2, xz, lz4, plzip, and zstd.

Then again, zstd can also do xz, gzip, xz, lzma, and lz4 so it’s kind of a one stop shop for the most part. I wish it had bz2 support tho.

@matrix @matrix why do so many people put the dollar sign on the wrong side of the number?

The education system has failed us
@matrix @FediJoshJ @matrix I dunno about other languages but but in English the symbol goes before the number e.g. $12, £24, €17, ¥320. The only exception is if the symbol denotes a fraction of the currency. then it goes at the end of the number e.g. 45¢, 32p. However, $0.45 and £0.32 are also correct ways to write it.
@xue @sjw @alyx @matrix "Hello, I would like to pay dollar eight, please" statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged.

@bartholin @sjw @xue @matrix
$8 looks nicer, cleaner, but yeah, it makes less sense than 8$. Just like how MM/DD/YYYY is kinda stupid.

@alyx @matrix @alyx @bartholin @xue @matrix when reading it lets you know that the number is money before you get to the number.

@sjw @xue @matrix @bartholin
Sure, but how is that useful exactly? Cause you're still reading the number just the same regardless. I'm not aware of a situation where you read a number denoting a sum of money any different than any other number.
Also, if $8 is better, why don't we see the same with measurements of length, weight etc?

@alyx @bartholin @sjw @matrix
mm/dd/yyyy is useful when you are a farmer and need to know when to sow or plow

@xue @sjw @matrix @bartholin
Because dd/mm/yyyy or yyyy/mm/dd doesn't carry the exact same information?

Just pick a logical order of increasing or decreasing granularity of your units. That's all I'd want from this clusterfuck. I feel like plucking my hair out when I see americans do dates like: big-thing/smallest-thing/biggest-thing.
Makes as much sense to me, as if I measured a road as: 15 feet, 5 inches and 20 miles.

@alyx @xue @sjw @matrix @bartholin Write it from smallest number to largest number. Today's date would be 01122225, for example.

@Alex @sjw @bartholin @matrix @xue
I think we should convert the date in number of seconds since an arbitrary date, and then convert that number in binary.

@alyx @Alex @sjw @bartholin @matrix
i personally like dd/month in roman numerals/year
but computers took that from us

@xue @sjw @matrix @bartholin @Alex
We used to do that in school. Don't really remember when I stopped. I've only seen dd/mm/yyyy in the real world where I live.

@alyx @sjw @matrix @bartholin @Alex yeah, we stopped doing that because of computers
but it was nice and intelligible in all european languages
@alyx @sjw @matrix @bartholin yeah, but you first look at the month, day is less important to you
@alyx @matrix @alyx @matrix it has nothing to do with the country. It's about the language. In English, the currency symbol goes before the number (unless the symbol denotes a fraction). I explained it better here with examples:

This meme is in English. Therefore the dollar sign at the end of the number is incorrect.

@sjw @matrix
The meme might be in English, but it doesn't mean it was made by a native English speaker. It could have been made by someone that is not fluent enough to understand how currency symbols work in English. So they'll just default to the style native to their own country.

@sjw @matrix
I could be wrong of course, but for small mistakes like that, or doing DD/MM/YYYY instead of MM/DD/YYYY my default assumption is always that it's not someone fluent in English.

@sjw @matrix raped by markdown again..........

"quantity" "unit"*

@sjw @matrix because these retards only remember that you say 8 dollars, instead of remembering literally anytime they’ve seen a dollar amount written down, ever.

@matrix Someone made a whole separate program called 7zip just to make that popup go away.

On the internet, every good idea gravitates towards eventually being easy and free.
@polarisera @alex @matrix Only thing with 7 zip is the file association may not work out of the box. And if you have to manually set it you have to pick the right executable in irser for it to work.

But its so fucking worth it in the end
