@Polychrome @xianc78 @root @lanodan The "retro" label is actually pretty useful these days.
All it means to me is that it has guaranteed no communist wokeness and no soycialist bullcrap like lootboxes, micro transactions, paid DLC, always online, and all the rest of the bloat inserted into it.

And yes, I don't consider those things to be capitalist, because capitalism relies on customers paying for quality on a voluntary basis (you pay and it's yours, you do with it whatever you want).
Soycialism on the other hand relies on stealing your money and scamming your wallet dry, even after you already bought it, regardless of how low quality the product is, which is exactly what all the current year bloat is.

The context? In 2019 Mastodon as a whole had gained two different userbases: people who wanted a Twitter alternative and to federate and find similar people, and people who wanted to wall themselves in to extreme levels (the canceldon servers with extreme rulesets). You know, like the instances using "secure mode" and having extra long blocklists with comical rules and block reasons anyone laughs at and worry about their safety while oversharing, as their idea of opsec is "I hope the bad people don't find my public posts". The latter took credit for things such as private posts and content warnings and saw themselves as the CEOs of the project...while not really being big contributors or forking the darn thing like Alex did.

The end result was a giant shitfest between the idea guys who came up with ideas and wanted to be credited for them, and Eugen who did the programming and people declaring their "leave from Mastodon" and running back to Twitter. They could do this as they weren't constantly eating Twitter bans but in fact wanted something that had more censorship than Twitter.

Reading up on the early history of the fedi makes the flamewars with Alex and quote posts look like nothing burgers, like when Mastodon added in trends and hashtags.
