tl;dr Rothschilds were never rich, they were servants to the bri*ish royalty. The brits selected them because as Jews, they were isolated & vulnerable w/ no secure citizenship and historically distrusted by the general population.

The brits then went on to use Rothschilds as camouflage to make loans to European countries who would have been far too suspicious to accept debt from the brits themselves.
