Github banned its cofounder due to bug or AI-based automation. He is back now, but for couple of hours, his account was suspended. Yet, another reason to avoid Github?

@xianc78 @menherahair exactly, it's all about remembering to have respect for nature while being thankful for stuff like electricity, internal combustion engines and things that aren't computerized too hard

@TornadoOfTerror consoles became superfluous once steam became popular. you can buy a closed system with ads, paid online service, and horrendous prices for games, or you get on steam and leave the bs behind

The last reasons to own a console were good handhelds, Nintendo originals, and exclusives in general. Xbox had none of that, and steam deck is working on obliterating those reasons too

"Open Source Windows" ReactOS just got better GUI install setup, no GPT yet - Neowin

ReactOS, which is referred to sometimes as the Open source Windows, has received another major update. Following wider UEFI bootability, the OS has now got an upgraded installation setup GUI.

Never thought I'd be asking on behalf of #MutualAid, but I think this is a worthy first post.

Opal is a good friend of mine in need of financial support to keep the lights on. She offers technical services under the volatile.bz domain, covering Git, email, XMPP, Matrix, Mumble and a Tor relay.

As a co-op, she accepts donations on OpenCollective: https://opencollective.com/volatile

In future, Volatile hopes to explore Nextcloud and running a fedi instance with custom software. Funds that can be spared would help make these a reality.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please consider donating, even if it's just $5.

I'm trying to put together a resource that outlines the serious concerns related to mandated id-verification online.

The obvious ones that come to mind are:
1) The particular third-parties with access to information
2) General surveillance / profiling concerns
3) De-platforming (what happens if they turn off your online ID?)

Other than those main points, is there anything that strikes you as particularly concerning about state mandated online ID verification which is being
proposed here in Canada

@UncleIroh
CBDC doesn't solve inflation and cannot do shit against hyperinflation. It's a false belief propagated by people who doesn't understand economics.

Digital ID is the second worst (after gun control) as it literally is the good old soviet iron curtain.

I wonder if a decentralized DoorDash or UberEats is feasible. There is already something similar, but for ride sharing (LibreTaxi), but a decentralized food delivery network will need to have an easy to set up server as we are talking about restaurant owners/managers here.

@LordMordred @deprecated_ii I'm pretty sure that medieval peasants still worked pretty darn hard. The stuff you might do out in the fields would be nowhere near the whole of what needed doing, and even if you didn't have as rigid a schedule, you'd still have plenty of backbreaking work. That doesn't mean there weren't positives and joyful aspects to medieval life, but the "peasants had it better" narrative isn't really true. Mind you a lot of the "forced happiness" aspect of service sector jobs and the like weren't present, you could go about your daily tasks with whatever demeanor you wished without fake corporate "teamwork" bullshit. And there was more of a sense of community and purpose, even if you generally didn't have much space or many luxuries to yourself. I would have to say in most respects modernity is better, and it's easier to work around the deficiencies of modernity than it was for the medievals, but the stuff that really leads to happiness exists in all ages, and it's just a matter of making the most of what you have.
