Youtube just recommended me a very... possibly concerning video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh1pF1zaauc

Basically, end to end encryption may be effectively compromised due to AI companion software being able to read whatever's going on on your screen. I highly recommend disabling any AI software that comes pre-packaged with your operating system if this is at all possible. If it's not, then switch to a Linux distribution for your safety.

Windows 10's demise nears, but Linux is forever theregister.com/2025/01/28/win by @sjvn

Want to keep your old computer running? Can't stand #Windows 11? Then, it's time to give serious thought to switching to desktop #Linux.

@gabriel @xianc78 GPL only protects software distribution. AGPL protects networked usage as well. facebook isn't distributing linux.

What type of series (be it books, movies, or video games) do you prefer? Would you rather have a series that could theoretically go on forever (e.g Mario, Call of Duty, etc) or a series with a definitive end-point (e.g Earthbound/Mother, most book series etc.).

Nothing says "stuck in the 90s" more than calling flash drives "jump drives".

Exactly. People keep calling this a "Sputnik moment" and that means MORE money will be plowed into US AI, not less. It also means that OpenAI will stop slow-rolling releases and will show us the good stuff now instead of dribbling it out over the next 3 years like they probably originally planned.

@caekislove I bought stonks yesterday because I thought this was a speedbump and that this would spur investment in US AI out of panic.

I did not expect this, but I am now making money either way. :konata_happy:

They just blocked new registrations to DeepSeek unless you have a Chinese telephone number because they know the benchmarks they published were BS and that DeepSeek hallucinates like a psychotic person. They want you to believe the hype because if you actually use it, it's clearly around 2022 GPT-3 level.

Does this count as a GPL violation?
(Preventing people from sharing/accessing the source code?)

Has anyone forked DeepSeek and removed the pro-CCP biases yet? I want an AI that is completely neutral as possible.

From tunes.org/wiki/no-kernel.html

> A term describing a system without a kernel. The idea looks like it is original as far as operating systems are concerned, but it is so natural that for any other kind of software (and one of our points is that there should be no such privileged notion as that of an "Operating System" well-separated from "Applications") where there isn't such a stubbornly overwhelming tradition, it is the very idea of a kernel that looks odd.

> Software in a no-kernel system works just like most any software: various objects interact, each doing its part of the work. The difference compared to software in kernel-based systems? No-kernel software is not limited to a single centralizing entry point like the Unix syscall() or DOS interrupts, whose overhead, limitations, bugs and misdesign you must cope with or work around. Instead, objects can directly interact one with the other, and you can upgrade/extend/modify any unlocked part of the system anytime.

The Arctic was supposed to be ice-free by 2013. It wasn’t. The Maldives were supposed to be underwater by 2018. They aren’t. How many failed predictions before they admit it’s a scam?

On behalf of the SHELL Liberty Community Center in the Freecoast of New Hampshire, we would like to offer an honorary lifetime membership to our friend Ross Ulbricht as a gift for his dedication to liberty and in celebration of his freedom.

No matter where he goes in his travels (now that he is free of federal cages), we want Ross to know that he always has a home in the Free State.

What is the SHELL?

We began as a clubhouse during Covid to foster a sense of normalcy, and have since grown into a vibrant community.

We take pride in being a voice for honorable victims of the federal government, as exemplified when we hosted Julian Assange's brother and father in their efforts to free Julian. Our members have worked behind the scenes to raise awareness about Ross' case.

For example, our member Rhonda Rohrabacher ran the RFK Jr. Presidential Campaign and brought him to Porcfest, where he was first pressed about Ross Ulbricht and his stance on the case. Later, Mr. Kennedy publicly advocated for Ross’ full pardon.

Additionally, the great liberty philosopher and PorcFest organizer, Dennis Pratt, brought prominent political candidates to Porcfest 2023, including Vivek Ramaswamy. It was here that Ramaswamy first learned about Ross Ulbricht and ultimately spoke out in support of a pardon, becoming the first major GOP presidential candidate to do so.

We also introduced all political candidates to Ross' wonderful mother and champion, Lynn Ulbricht. Porcfest has long been fertile ground for the "Free Ross" movement.

One of our members and Free Ross petition signers, Brent Tweed, organized the Ron Paul 2012 victory in Maine — an act that led to a strong overreaction by the RNC and rule changes that backfired against the establishment, ironically benefitting Donald Trump's path to the 2016 GOP nomination.

This is just a small part of the dedication our SHELL members have shown in advocating for Ross, whom we believe was unjustly prosecuted through an unfair trial and prosecution.

Therefore, the SHELL Community and our members would be honored to offer Ross a membership as he transitions to back to a life of freedom. We understand that this transition will be challenging, but our members have always supported one another in difficult times. We would be privileged to extend our friendship and support to one of our heroes, Ross Ulbricht.

@souldessin @vokainen099 @xianc78 basically foss needs to rethink a lot to stay sustainable in the broader market so we aren't solely depending on the fsf as a cornerstone for our success. something else to worry about is maintaining a release schedule for updates, which (in your example) libreoffice would have to figure out on their end how to enter contracts with these businesses
xianc78 boosted
@souldessin @vokainen099 @xianc78 the trick there is for those software projects to distribute physical copies so that it *does* introduce production and logistic costs. pretty much a loophole for that shitty system
