I can't be alone in thinking "The Linux Experiment" YouTuber is a moron. No, no. I know I'm not alone cause the video was sent to me by another developer thinking the same thing.

So end-users submitting bug reports to an upstream project (like GNOME) rather than a distribution's bug tracker without first verifying if the issue exists in the GNOME project's version of the software is NOT new nor correct. This is literally an "issue" as old as time itself.

I find it humorous that some developers today don't understand how free software works. Linux Mint for example is shipping an old version of GNOME calendar more or less. I get there are some add-ons for display, but it's still essentially GNOME's calendar program, old, but GNOME calendar none-the-less.

For instance:

"drop the package entirely and let users get it from us"

This completely overlooks the reason users download a distribution or this distribution in the first place. It's geared at those wanting stuff that is going to work and continue working. Not some app that is constantly being updated with new features and as a consequence breaking things every other day.

Some users like Arch users do little more than play with GNU/Linux and want that too, but that's not Linux Mint. The vast majority of folks using your software want stuff that is stable and continues working not major changes breaking things every other day. Major changes SHOULD NOT OCCUR until major new releases. Only security updates.

It's not Linux Mint (for the most part) that is doing it wrong. It's you not understanding free software.

The part of the complaint that has a tiny bit of merit is naming, but it is still a bit ridicules given it is mostly GNOME calendar still, just old.

slop in free software isn't the same as most other ethical problems, i can fork it. it isn't like "GET THE JAB OR DIE". i can well use some 2 years old checkout and be happy, or something completely different.

i don't like the AI stuff for reasons but if you don't force me or shit on me for not using it, it's fine.

@dalias @Ember I am once again reminded of the Yahoo blogpost that nobody else seems to remember, about how they completely banned UI overhauls - you could present a new UI design, sure, but you'd *also* have to present a ton of incremental steps to get from the current design to the new one, because you were never allowed to change more than one tiny, easy-to-adjust-to thing at a time.

of course that's also the big problem with the Xbox online being centralized vs the PS2. On the PS2, all you have to do is write a cheat code to bypass the DNAS check (since not all games have working DNAS support) and then usually change the DNS to redirect whatever gamespy/EA domains to your private server.

On the Xbox you have the centralized online backend.

A Simple, Lightweight, Unopinionated, Federation Interconnect.

The problem: While numerous network transports exist (cjdns, Yggdrasil, I2P, Tor, etc), and numerous name services exist (Namecoin, ENS, Unstoppable Domains, PKT, etc), almost all federation takes place over ICANN+IP because we currently have no way to federate across network boundaries, and ICANN+IP is the only thing that everybody has.

I claim that there is no possible solution SIMPLER than SLUFI, except with central authority or PRECIPITOUS loss of security. Furthermore, I claim there is no possible solution that is more secure than SLUFI, except with something like a blockchain and a PRECIPITOUS loss of simplicity.

So while I do not think this protocol is complete (yet), I do think SLUFI is the only realistic starting point for reaching a solution to this problem.
