@genetic_failure Insurance companies by definition cost more than if everyone paid for their own shit if only because of the overhead of running the insurance company.

The benefit of insurance is that the costs (and risk) is spread out, but as a matter of simple arithmetic, it's more expensive. For everyone enjoying more benefits than they're paying for with premiums, there is at least one person paying premiums and using no services whatsoever.
