I only use conservative ironically now, because at its core, it is a leftie term equal in meaning to "reactionary". It pre-supposes, that whatever society is now, conservatives love it and will fight to preserve it, contrary to the commie utopia.
Obviously, the society as it is now is not acceptable for left and right, so neither side is willing to defend it. And this effect will only get worse.
