I hate it, but pedowood has loves to do the "the classical character you love is completelly different in the entire movie, but we will teaze him at the end of last scene to actually become the person you love". In this case, they actually tried making the character accurate in the 2nd one.
But it might be hard for me to judge. I had no investment into the sonic fandom at all before these two movies, so I am not exactly critical.
