What a stupid situation :D I am older, and I definitelly don't have anything in common with that consumerist generation.
Sorry @beardalaxy but @matana is right. Wasting rent only so you can live "on your own" is stupid.
1) Humans should not live alone, unless it's necessary.
2) You can absolutely learn how to cook, clean and live under the guide of your parents. It's actually better that way. And if you have a multi-generational household, it makes parenting easier. Most decent grandparents would love to spend a few days a week with the kids. And the adults need help.
3) Even if nothing else, it helps you save up for an actual house. Money should not be flowing at any cost.

This only makes sense if they sell the house and get two smaller homes to live separately. Not if they move out, where are they gonna go? The total loss/benefit equation does not work out. Usually it's best to stay together, if only for the logistics.

i sometimes think i'm a big ol' degenerate but at least i pay my own bills, buy my own food, live away from home, positively contribute to society, and have some semblance of integrity and public decency. i still have some friends that live with their parents and go to college doing pretty much nothing with their lives and i'm almost 30. wtf man.
