Kinda. Besides, for a while people managed to gather together just around being truth seekers and appreciating scientific discourse.

But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Or in other words, Atheism+ came along, as a bunch of power hungry psychos, pretended they had the real moral truth, and wanted to control how everyone in the community behaved.
Before people talked of social-justice, before intersectional feminism, before talks of critical race theory and DEI, before "woke", it was Atheism+. And it ultimately dissolved the community. The old groups that were supposed to advocate for Atheism and defend the separation of Church and state in US, now advocate for literally anything else but that.

That's what happens when you let these types of people in. Everything you worked for gets sabotaged and derailed. :peepoShrug:

The Vshojo drama made me think about something... it's a bit of a stretch, but hang on with me.

So there's one thing that religions and Churches usually get credit for. Building communities. Even the Atheist movement acknowledged that one of the big reasons people don't abandon Christianity, even if they don't actually believe in god anymore, is their need to be in a community. And it's the thing I would hear a lot from Atheist figures that we needed to get better at. (Atheists never did manage to build healthy communities. Instead it all went completely to shit).

Well, I've been thinking now... are vtubers the new churches?
Like look at this shit, Ironmouse makes a video, then more vtubers and people covering the drama follow suit, and before you know it, you have a community raising over $1 million for charity. Isn't this one of those things we expect out of churches? To bring people together, to unify under a goal, and do good deeds (charity) together? And it's hardly the first hugely successful charity event vtubers lead.
And I guarantee you there are people of completely opposite sides of the political spectrum in the streams of the most popular vtubers. So they're definitely able to build a community and have people set aside differences for a couple of hours.
"But Vtubers don't preach, you dummy". You sure? I've seen plenty of examples of vtubers telling people "hey, don't be that guy". I've seen them setting moral examples and telling people right from wrong. It's not the sort of nagging preaching, sure. But then again, good priests weren't supposed to feel nagging.

We're in a new age. Why shouldn't our spiritual leaders be completely different from what we're used to? Who's to say Jesus has to reincarnate in ragged clothes? Maybe he can reincarnate as a cute anime waifu?

@icedquinn The problem is, can you trust them not to backstab you literally immediately? Cause I don't. I think a movement to counterattack VISA/Mastercard would just be healthier without them. If they want to do a thing in parallel to protect LGBT content, good luck to them. But I don't think we can allow them in our communities. We've seen since ElevatorGate what they do. These people have broken more communities and sabotaged more movements from the inside than I can count.

Remember when "New Atheism" was a vibrant movement? Remember Reason Rally and how amazing it was for the movement? And then remember how it flopped and disappeared as soon as "social-justice" got involved?
These people simply aren't allies. They are poison. They'll do what they always did. Pretend to care for the same things, and then immediately try to assume power and take over your movement. After which, it dies out.

@rin If you look at it objectively, he was a bit of a psycho. But we still view Țepeș as one of our best rulers we've ever had.

@icedquinn You know the saying... even a broken clock.

The thing that pisses me off to no end is that pre 2010s, it was the left that fully advocated against censorship in media.
Then proceeded more than a decade of the "liberal" left, the progressives, the feminists, the social-justice warriors, whatever label you want to use for them, that started advocating for censorship in media. Now that they finally realized it's a problem (after ignoring everyone else that was screaming at them all this time to stop), NOW they're pretending to come around and realize "oops, this ain't good". All I have to say is a sincere "fuck you" to all those people.
I don't even care that they finally agree with me on something. I don't actually want them as an ally and I still want them to suffer deeply at this point. These kinds of people abused my goodwill for a decade, and they helped bring this into effect in the first place. I'm a very forgiving person, but I have my limits.

@MK2boogaloo My hunch is that Tetris would just help your brain shut down. Basically, you're enabling yourself to disassociate. Don't know if you're actually preventing trauma as much as repressing it.
No, I didn't read some study. Yes, I am making it up, by using reason and knowledge of how people play Tetris.

@yockeypuck I wonder if they realize how incredibly disturbing their "art" is? I bitched some time ago about how much I HATE soyjack memes, because they're nightmare inducing disturbing, and this feels to me to be on a similar level.

@Terry I say we just use the "divide your age by 2, and add 7" rule. Make it the legal standard.

@georgia
>what ideology is this
It's not. That's the beauty of it. Ideologies have a bad habit of turning into Soviet Union or 3rd Reich.

@matrix I don't even blame tbh. I've ranted a few times about how stupidly wasteful they are with their reencodes, keeping around old options that barely anyone (if not outright no one) uses anymore. They should be cleaning house. But they probably still went for the wrong option.

Can't imagine them having any significant amount of users whose devices can't play vp9. I really think they should ax h264 instead. Keep it only for livestreaming, since it works better for fast encoding/low latency, but switch to vp9 for long term offering.

Huh.. made an interesting discovery. Old YouTube streams (1-2 years old) that previously had a vp9 encoding (something I KNOW for certain, since I have downloads of those streams) now only have h264 encodings (verified with yt-dlp but also in browser). I guess they're trying to save disk space. Very interesting though.

My guess (how I'd do things), they probably have some cleaup utility, where if a video wasn't played for long enough, it will delete all encodings except what is needed for maximum compatibility.

Not the first time I tried to (re)download an old stream, but this is the first time I noticed codecs missing from YouTube's repertoire. Must be a cost cutting measure.

The bats finally took their revenge. RIP Ozzy Osbourne.

@beardalaxy Yeah, I heard. It's been slowly brewing ever since Matara left. Matara, Geega, Zen, some staff members. But with Ironmouse, the dam broke, and I think they're all leaving. Surely, removing Vshojo from their Twitter names is not a good sign, even if they didn't all announce it yet.

@beardalaxy It's starting to sound like no one was getting payed since last year. Just from Ironmouse and Kson alone, I think they might have stolen close to $1 million.

The Vshojo story keeps getting worse. They even managed to screw over what was supposed to be the future gen.

@weaf My default assumption already is that all vtubers have boyfriends, if not husbands, already. So... meh... :peepoShrug:

>faceless billion dollar corporation that controls their livelihood
Thing is, we've already seen evidence that the Biden admin was pushing for a lot of censorship. I think most of it was essentially politically driven. It wasn't always from presidents, or politicians, maybe sometimes it was from political NGOs or activists. But this shit was driven by politics.

I'm sorry, but you can't convince me anymore that the average company gives a crap if their ad is placed next to a news story of a pedophile raping a child. They care about views and people buying the product. Actually, correction, they don't even care about views that much. They care for the end result of more sales.

I think a lot of the censorship was driven by old mainstream media trying to sabotage new media. Let's remember that the Pewdiepie Adpocalypse was manufactured by mainstream media. It wasn't new media that pressured YouTube to make changes. It was always the mainstream media, either themselves, or through 3rd party activists, that constantly manipulated and shaped these spaces.
