If anyone has #Soapbox instance recommendations I'm all ears
So long story short I got kicked off of mstdn.social for not liking #BlackLivesMatter and being "alt right" (lol)
This is a key part of what's incentivizing me distancing myself from #Mastodon and refusing to join any new ones. The culture of these instances in general is too toxic and intolerant to accept diverse opinions, even when expressed respectfully. (Note that nothing listed in the notice breaks the rules of mstdn.social, and furthermore the "alt-right" claim isn't backed up by listing any stances of mine that could be deemed alt-right.)
So for everyone who was following me at @realcaseyrollins@mstdn.social, it's been a good run, but I'm moving on. @realcaseyrollins@kafuka.me will be my new SFW main, and @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world will be my new SFW alt.
It'll take me a bit to get things up and running on the SFW alt, but we will soon be back in business. No love lost, stux and the users are still nice, amiable people and I hope to continue communicating with the same users in the future.

I've been kicked off of instances without warnings or reasonings before. Even apparently barred from signing up on the only #Christian instance I'm aware of, theres.life, and the admin refused to tell my why I haven't been able to get the confirmation code (over a span of over a week).
At least the mstdn.social folks had the balls to email me and give me their excuse for banning me. Props to them for that.

It's clear that this is what Eugen Rochko wants the Fediverse to be. While I personally prefer Mastodon over Pleroma (mostly due to the interface). I clearly see why people have a problem with Mastodon due to the dev behind it.
I just hope that Pleroma will bring more free-speech instances and by proxy, more diversity of thought.

There’s definitely a diversity of thought, in the fediverse, even if some centers of thought server-block others.

I will continue to use #Mastodon but I have ZERO respect for him and will not donate or contribute to the Mastodon project.

Its terrible, and you miss out on a lot of good folks. Look at say @mewmew at myself, we’re politically very different — but we get along just fine. Politics is one thing, someone being a person is another entirely.

While yes harassment exists here, there are enough anti-harassment tools here to combat that. Say #Spinster users started harassing you for being trans, you could just block the instance.
Honestly it's getting quite apparent that the mentality propelling the current #boogaloo (Civil War II) was already in the minds of many; "if you don't agree with me, we can't coexist" predates 2020. It's just that now with the lockdowns everyone's too antsy to keep their opinions to the internet and are acting them out in the streets.
It's teen girl antics, really. Never been a fan of intolerant cliques.
Pretty annoying to see things like that happening, like when the admin of a left wing, liberal and progressive instance deleted my account for contacting them respectfully and inquiring about a silencing of another instance, which as a staff person I was representing.
Progressive? I would say he's of the Stalinist persuasion, but I have also moved on, and ignore his instance from now on.
There's a lot more in some other places, and I would suggest F.A.B. as a good Pleroma instance -- Puniko is very nice and the instance has been an incubator for others, local users going out and setting their own instances over time too. A good community, and SoapBox is already installed and on the main menu as a FE choice.

Mastodon vanilla instances, I have no interest it anymore. GlitchSocial ones have enhancements I enjoy, and at this moment, do the best rendering of MarkDown formatting. This instance I am writing from is now my main account, with FAB being the Pleroma branch and a more relaxed, bantering place.
I saw a reply to you from Koyu, who just put together a Misskey instance - those I have not seen yet.

I'm guessing Stux likes the group so everyone else on the instance has to as well. 🤷🏾♂️ Also they said at least ten accounts claimed I was "alt-right"...without showing me what it was that I said that was wrong or alt-right. Funnily enough I had been calling #TuckerCarlson alt-right adjacent and blaming #FoxNews for the right's turn to more extremes at the time, too. I'm clearly not alt-right.
IDK who did the reporting, and maybe that's a good thing. I do have my suspicions, but no evidence. Part of it is I'm pretty sure the only reason I got booted was cuz SJWs reed loud enough, Stux was following me for the longest time and didn't give me any sort of warning at all, which is fair considering that I didn't break any of their written rules.

If considering self-hosting, again Pleroma is a better option, as Mastodon is overly complicated, seems like a ball of spaghetti code. Pleroma was written later and with the goal of being lean and efficient.
Result, it IS. I have used a small instance that runs on a raspberry Pi, and it's responsive, better than many mastodon nodes. Which always feel ponderous, slowish when you come back from a session elsewhere.

Yes! Nothing like comparing the experience of a plain #Mastodon instance to a #Pleroma instance running a #Mastodon FE. Even that is way faster.
That "Account suspended" email is one of the worst feelings in the world. Mastodon went above and beyond to design software which empowers neurotic, tyrannical admins.
The email template has a gavel icon because "justice has been served." It's designed to be as big of a "FUCK YOU" to the user as possible.
I really believe Mastodon put design effort into making the user feel like shit.
Another reason it's doomed to fail and why it's not getting too much attention by main stream media.

It's no wonder it turned out like that, Gargamel got journos to chill Mastodon as a "controllable, nazi-less alternative" so you got all the crazies joining and he's been catering to them since them, and making his bed in it. He's been screamed and abused by his own userbase left and right, so yeah, I'm not surprised the authoritarian bullshit is reflected in the software
There's litle difference between Mastodon and Twitter.
In fact, Mastodon got worse as soon as the EU peered into the fediverse as part of the EUnomia project.

That was my experience with Mastodon sites. I got kicked from three of them, due to disagreeing with mods about something, or simply mentioning that I don’t hate Gab.
I’d love to test https://Mammudeck.com against a Mastodon instance, and maybe I’ll try mastodon.social with a new gmail address, but I’ll bet that even mentioning Mammudeck there will get me booted; it doesn’t block ANYTHING. It’s a sharp tool, not a political viewpoint enforcer.
Personally I'm using hubzilla, has a shit tonne of plugins and works with pleroma, mastodon, diaspora, etc.
