You can try Fluffy Chat on android and nheko on desktop as alternatives to Riot. There are more clients being developed, but it will take some time for them to catch up to Riot on features.
Also https://Quicksy.im makes a simpler entry point for people used to WhatsApp and Telegram like contact discovery, still being #XMPP and federated.

Prediction: we're already seeing this so it kinda goes without saying that the #Democrat party is going to go full #KKK (again) and intimidate people at the voting booth for voting for #Trump. After the fact, those who have been found to have voted for #Trump will be lynched and have their houses burned, their family shot.
One wonders if Snowden regrets throwing away his life to warn ungrateful Americans about unconstitutional NSA wire-tapping.
