@Ox To be fair there are many reasons why some people, both men and women might feel uncomfortable being on the Fediverse. @lucy @MisterRogersSnapped

@Ox @lucy I honestly hope they are not intimidated. In fedi or in tech.

I work in a tech career and find most women in my field to be pretty damned brilliant. Same ratio of brilliance to arrogance as male techs, in fact. :)

I honestly think the days of the tech gap are coming to a close. As older people retire the older attitudes are, as well. Women who came up with tech in the era of companies like Big Blue are tough, smart, mercenary cutthroats but they had to be and I find it respectable.

One of my own greatest mentors and teachers in this industry was a woman and she will have my love and respect for an eternity. If she was 25 or 30 years younger I would have begged her to marry me and she would have laughed her ass off because she was a homosexual.

There should be no recognition of sex in tech. A computer, a network, a device, a CPU, a phone or whatever does not care what plumbing you have or who you want to be with or what god you believe in or whatever. There is only GIGO.

As for the fedi... well. Just have fun with it like Ox does I reckon.
@reg @alex @lucy @seanking haha yes for sure. however without all free speech, we have nothing to compare and contrast great speech to
I understand. I tend to self-identify in a similar way (left-leaning politically but pro-free-speech). That said, while I support free speech, I am under no delusions about it. Speech (free or otherwise) is usually quite stupid. Remove consequences and give people anonymity and it becomes even stupider. The Fediverse is something I dreamed of as a life-long free-speecher. A decentralized, censorship-proof distributed-system with almost no limits on speech and almost no ability to police that speech. Incredible. Now it's here and I can't stand the place most of the time. A bunch of geriatric children yelling "nigger kike faggot paki feminazi bitches" over and over again. Be careful what you wish for, as the saying goes.

@Ox @lucy @alex @seanking
@reg @lucy of course. however the majority of fedi can be split into generally supports free speech and supporting strict censorship. the former tends to lean right and the latter, far left. as a left leaning person on the free speech side, you can encounter some very interesting situations.
@Ox @lucy I think a lot of that depends on who you follow. I made the mistake of setting my Fediverse instance up to relay freespeechextremist. Pleroma is buggy so I can't undo that, now. As a result, my feed is full of 70-somethings railing about how we need to deport all the darkies. That'd be me.
@lucy it means that fedi can be intimidating for women when they read the onslaught of general misogyny from a lot of users. if you favour the free speech side of fedi the majority of users appear to be men in the tech field or with interest in tech. I hope to make it more welcoming for women in particular who may find that intimidating.
@lucy I also I like to be a friendly face for women new here so they know it's not just tech bros
@lucy there's a notable difference in the amount of misogyny and sexism I receive when it's blatant I'm a woman. when I used other pictures I was treated differently. I would rather know straight up who is a sexist and who isn't
and stop showing faces, if I'd want to see people I would leave my fucking room.

@Lainyboy @baraposter @realcaseyrollins oh they also explicitly state that they will collect virtually any/all data they can get off you using the website including, when available, location data
@Lainyboy @baraposter @realcaseyrollins they also say that if they lose your data or "mishandle" it or experience a data breach that they're not responsible and you can't hold them liable

i don't know how much of this would actually hold up in a court since you can't just make a contract that says anything you want it to say…but this is all in their user agreement and privacy policy
@baraposter @Lainyboy @realcaseyrollins they also have in their user agreement that by posting any content to their website they automatically get a world-wide royalty free license to use, modify, or otherwise monetize your content and distribute it to their partners

Fuck it, I'm calling it. Marketwatch probably qualifies as fake news.
In a story about how there are actually 20 million covid infected in USA, they claim the CDC came up with the number, but there's no link to a CDC statement, there's no source to anything anywhere!

Why the fuck are people trusting this site for science news!

Source of story that got me annoyed:

Who could have expected more black lives would be lost by defunding the police so that only the wealthy could afford security?

‘Defund The Police’: NYC Shootings EXPLODE Amid Disbanding Of Anti-Crime Units, Reassignment Of Hundreds Of Officers

As calls from the Left intensify to abolish the police, and New York City takes action to remove officers and dismantle vital anti-crime units, the city that never sleeps surged in gun violence by a stunning 358% since this time last year. “It has been nearly a quarter century since New York City experienced as […]
