@guttersessions yeah, I mean the entire point of Plato's vision of the academy is to create a stately elite of knowledge, so in that regard it's certainly as much of a trainwreck as intended.

Ideally science should be done as a hobby by highly motivated people. I mean you can pay them to be able to do it full time if they're not already millionaires, and you have to if it's anything that requires expensive equipment. But lighthearted experimentation and the eradication of petty status striving needs to be left, right, and center. All the bureaucracy needs to go, all the HR departments need to go, all the awards need to go, all the peer review circle-jerk needs to go, but most of all, the political correctness and matronly office culture need to go.
