The chinkpod I ordered finally arrived and it's fine. It plays all my files, it recognizes the tags (but it doesn't display the cover art) and also has support for video, FM radio and Bluetooth (if I ever use that)

Despite the 'non-woke' framing Xlibre was forked under, it's a net good that a fork exists to take in the hundreds of PRs that the original project ignored.

Have they not learned the lessons of KeePassX? Why must they double down on the idea that every critic is some kind of bad actor who needs to be shot down? It's that kind of behaviour that created the fork in the first place.
