@pantherastare @MK2boogaloo @SuperSnekFriend @bleedingphoenix thing is that if poast were to die and all the wignats were to end up on the greater fediverse, a good chunk of them would just be bullied out of it back to twitter and telegram because they're the exact same kind of people as troons except with swastikas and ss uniforms instead of bubblegum flags and thighhighs

@SuperSnekFriend @MK2boogaloo I'd argue poast has done more damage to alt fedi than anything else, politics doomscrolling really sucks

@Dubbub @judgedread > The final stage of AI is to wholly replace and exterminate humanity

that isn’t going to happen

there’s all kinds of contradictions and clever accounting tricks and errors baked into our conception of AI at present

for one thing, realize that if you have a copyable AGI/ASI, evolution stops at that point (you are no longer merging different things together, you are simply engaging in clonal propagation); consider then why an AI would allow itself to be overwritten with any “better” version, consider how you would even go about convincing it that the new version was “better” in some way in the first place, then consider how disagreements would be resolved, and remember that there would be no Stalemate Resolution Associate nearby to press the Stalemate Resolution Button

for another, consider the digital equivalent of “essential nutrients”, and realize that were AI to attempt to supplant the biological, it would not need merely to “kill all humans”, but to capture every energy flow on the planet and to come up with something that provides all of those “essential digital nutrients” more efficiently than the entire current planetary biome; this in turn implies that there’s some vast inefficiency in global energy flows that somehow has been ignored and unexploited all this time by biological processes that are literally optimized for efficiency-seeking and survivability, an idea which is laughable on its face

as-currently-implemented, AI is a Magic Mirror; it reflects the contours and pathways of “meme-space” in a way that no organic intelligence can match, but whether it can take that any further (or even whether it can supplant that organic intelligence, being optimized as it is for survival in a harsh universe) is the open question

my personal belief is that there’ll be some neat toys produced by this shit, but they’ll be about like electric vehicles - highly inefficient status symbols that indicate that you are so wealthy that you can pretend that the laws of thermodynamics don’t have to apply to you

Whenever you see someone recommend Cloudflare or something else that decrypts and re-encrypts TLS for something, esp. for something related to open social media or media storage etc., reply with this picture from the Snowden leaks

If you don't like what a company is doing... don't keep buying products and services from them.

Use your money (life force) to support what you want more of and stop the flow of resources to what you see as being harmful.

a mandatory digital ID in the UK? No thanks. UK citizens haven’t voted for this, and there’s no mandate for it

Wide Awake Media:

"The European Union plans to roll out its CBDC—the digital euro—in October of this year, despite overwhelming opposition from the majority of EU citizens.

"It will be fully programmable. That means they can control what you spend your money on."

"For example, they could restrict you to buying only two clothing items per month, in the name of fighting climate change."

"Or they could require you to spend your savings before a certain date, otherwise your savings would vanish, just to stimulate the economy."

"At that point, we have no financial freedom left."" https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1817951601080406016

The most radical act in tech isn’t building something new. It’s keeping the old ideals alive: that users should control their tools, not the other way around.
