I don't think that's a sign capitalism isn't working .. because capitalism isn't really happening. That's an issue with loans, fractional reserve banking and extending debt. There's some overlap, but countries did have capitalism on gold/metal standard before fiat currencies. They had their own gold price stability problems, sure, but at least their money was attached to something that takes value to extract.

The entire AI bubble is based on loans nobody is calling on, so it just circulates a debt cycle.

It's a bit worse than that too. I think the AI bubble is designed to collapse. It's how you get rid of something even as corrupt as fiat currency and replace it with programmable, compartmental, digital, traceable money. The technocratic Epstein class want a world were people can't say, "I want $65k/year." They have to say, "I want at least 100 USDT housing allotment, 30 USDT food-coin and 20 USDT-luxary spending."

The looming threat of carbon tax on fertilisers, which the Labour government have earmarked from January 2027. Yet another financial hit on cash strapped farmers.

The cumulative financial hit could amount to an extra £80,000 for a standard 1,000-tonne wheat farm.

A perennial problem in gamedev is "oh don't worry it's X year so we don't need to worry as much about penny-pinching for the sake of perf" and then a year or two later in the same project it's "why are you using a square root there what do you think we're MADE of cpu cycles?!"

Incredible work from Godot on supporting the whole flow, right up to publication, all inside Android. This allows many, many more people to try making and to publish their own games, especially for kids or people in poorer countries, where access to a PC can often be harder than to a smartphone.

@Cocoa I dunno. Zip disks are fucking shite and you probably shouldn't even bother to touch them, but he has some level of a point has apparently there's a lot of Gen Z like that, and if the fuckers cared enough, we could probably escape the own nothing digital future instead of playing with Zip Disks or something

Here's my hot take for the night:

writing in books is borderline criminal unless they are books you printed and bound yourself or are books so cheap, old, and used they have not much time left for the world

It blows my mind that people are still using Ubuntu on the desktop. I actually thought for a moment that Ubuntu had disabled the ability of users to shut down their system. Yes- I only saw 'suspend' as an option when I went to the shutdown button. The reason is I was behind the lock screen. Seems like a bad design, but that might just be GNOME.

I have a ton of criticism for Canonical, but the most recent is they utterly dropped the ball for the 2nd time in a decade when it comes to USB wifi adapters. They failed to include the firmwares in 26.04 and so hundreds of thousands of users are unable to connect to the internet.

The only other "distribution" that I am aware of that has gotten it this wrong is "Purism's" ???? (I'm going blank with the name at the moment) and humorously that was worse because they didn't include the only free firmware in a distribution that only works with free software friendly hardware (theoretically, it appears they actually include non-free software, or they've been caught doing it repeatedly anyhow.. and stuff they should have caught... every other distro did).
