yes, there's precedent for the injury itself happening, and many people have been saying that neck guards should be mandatory now because it's happened enough times to be a serious cause for concern, but the WAY these injuries have happened is NOT the same as Johnson's.

"In 2010, Petgrave was suspended for five games, according to the Canadian Hockey League, which wrote, “Matt Petgrave will sit out the next five games for an infraction in the third period of last Saturday’s 9-4 win over Sarnia.”

In 2018, the ECHL announced that “Brampton’s Matt Petgrave has been suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #963, Brampton at Kalamazoo, on April 7.” The ECHL is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in New Jersey.

That same year, he was suspended for one game, according to the American Hockey League, which wrote on its website, “Laval Rocket defenseman Matt Petgrave has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of a slew-footing incident in a game at Toronto on Mar. 28. Petgrave was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 21.1 after being assessed a match penalty. He will miss Laval’s game tonight (Mar. 30) at Binghamton.”

According to the U.S. Hockey Rule Book, “Slew Footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him.”

A statement on the ECHL’s website said, “Petgrave is fined and suspended under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as a result of his actions at 3:46 of the third period. Petgrave will miss Brampton’s game against Adirondack today (April 8) and any further discipline will be announced at a later date.” That article did not provide additional details."

@picandor thankfully I'm at a job where when I do someone else's job they're grateful, since nobody does their job xD

But I did get fired from Costco a while back for throwing away rotten produce that nobody had done anything about for days instead of stocking shelves.

@LukeAlmighty literally, if he kept up the pace throughout the rest of the season, he'd beat the record (relatively, since the leagues have different season lengths) of the player with the most penalty minutes in a season in the NHL. That was back in the 70s.

I think him actually playing for so long adds to it as well, not just the fact that he's violent but he's been violent for a while and SHOULD have the skill to NOT do something like this on accident.

It's very hard for me to entertain the idea that it was an accident. The only thing that makes me somewhat doubt it being intentional is some professional players saying it was an accident, but I don't exactly trust pro sports players to be 1) smart and 2) honest. The idea that the leg raise was not intentional, or AT LEAST extremely negligent from a player who should know better... I just can't see that.

Either way I hope he never plays a game of hockey again. He's clearly a menace, or best case scenario he's lost his touch. It's like someone getting their license revoked for killing someone while driving under the influence. He shouldn't be able to play again and that's the LIGHTEST sentence anyone could give him.

If he is actually tried, I suspect it will end up as negligent homicide because there would likely be no way to prove intent unless maybe they had been going back and forth a bit in the game or on social media. Especially given how many pros will testify that it could be an accident (which I still really do not think is possible).
