@matrix @mischievoustomato it's stupid that this is allowed on steam but petite anime women aren't

@riserise happened to me last week too man, hope you get feeling better soon!

@teratology @anonicus having unrestricted internet access certainly makes it easier... Parents definitely need to watch what their kids are doing.

@Terry I thought this was going to be one of those "teacher is stupid and gives actual answers an f" pictures, but it's pretty unhinged xD

@mushroom_soup why is the teacher failing him for attendance if she knows this??

@Mr_NutterButter i can talk for hours and hours about this project man. it was definitely a mistake to tackle something so large as my first "real" project but it's going to be sooooo worth it once it is done and i've put so much of my life force into this thing lol.

it's kind of crazy to think i'm almost done with it. was chatting with the co-writer today and told him "yeah once i get the voice lines in, all i have to do is swap out some more tileset graphics and then the game is more or less done." his eyes went wide lol. it's been sooooo long.

long post

@Mr_NutterButter as far as character design goes, my biggest help was actually a design document of sorts that my creative writing teacher in high school gave to us specifically for characters. honestly that whole class was extremely helpful when it came to structuring stories.

before doing literally anything else, other than just having a sort of general idea of what we wanted the story to be, my co-writer and i came up with the character ideas. the original plan wasn't really to build an entire world, in fact the original plan wasn't even to have sequels or anything like that. just a self-contained story. so we focused on coming up with characters that we thought were cool first and foremost.

so here's a little peak behind the curtain at what that looks like. this was made all the way back in October 2015. his character developed more as we wrote the story after that so this isn't super representative of him anymore, but it did give a really good base to start with as we felt out the characters and their roles.

after we had the characters, we started working on the main story. pretty early on i knew i wanted each chapter to take place at a specific setpiece, and we had already picked those out and somewhat developed them, so we just wrote the characters into the scenario with their main goal in mind.

once the main story was done we started working on the side stories. we wrote some pretty damn intricate ones but unfortunately i needed to cut the longer ones because i need to get the game out at some point. most of the side quests you'll see in the game come solely from my writing. it was more or less just things that i thought would be interesting/fun for the player to do, to explore the world more, and the lore built itself up from that.

then we have these little lore stories within the game, and those were all actually written by a completely different writer, one of my friends. i basically gave her the character bios, access to the main/side story, and a general timeline of when each town was founded and for what purpose, and asked her to write a cool little lore piece about each town. so a lot of the supplementary lore outside of the big stuff like religion and politics is from her! she did a great job with it.

some of the stuff in the game you'll find, funny enough, actually came from the sequel d&d campaign that i ran with my roommates in 2019-2020. they came up with some cool stuff that they wanted integrated into their characters and i ended up developing it much more into a world at that point because i had to. it was then that i started to get way more attached to the world of god's disdain and wanted to expand it, make more games about it, etc. so i started writing a lot more background information, some of which actually does slip in to god's disdain in the way of NPC dialogue or small environmental things.

as far as story iterations, the main story only saw a couple bits here and there. it helped to have a co-writer because we were always bouncing things off each other and challenging what we wrote. side quests i've changed more, especially when i started developing them into the game because going back and re-reading them i noticed some things i didn't quite like. most of the lore written by my friend was solid, but i'd say maybe close to half of it required one or two extra passes, some of them got thrown out and needed to be replaced entirely or reworked into a different town.

@Mr_NutterButter haven't really played any of them so i can't comment on that :peepoShrug:
