Do Americans pay for gas before or after they pump it?

@matrix both. Either way as you're pumping there's a meter going up in gas and money.

@matrix depending on the type of card you use (debit/bank card or credit card) a temporary hold/charge is placed on the account to make sure you have enough to buy gas with and then it allows you to purchase the gas, adjusting the hold on your card to the amount that you pumped.

@milk @matrix you can also just walk and toss physical money at the guy. "$5 on pump 2"

And in some places it's surely still possible to pay completely after the transaction, and not even put a card in before pumping. These places have cameras after all, and your car has identification.
@matrix @milk @matrix in some extremely White areas that are still high trust, you don't pay until after you pump
For example a small station I visited in Montana:
You turn on the pump, pump your gasoline or diesel, turn off the pump, and then walk inside where a receipt already printed off for the amount pumped - and then you pay.

@milk
You guys are already a low trust society.
I've never seen a gas station like that. It's always you get the gas and then walk over to the cashier inside and pay.

they dont let you pump before paying where i live.

you can put your card in and it charges you as you pump cant you?
since the transaction happens after you stop pumping i considered it paying after

It usually puts a hold on your card beforehand though.

yeah exactly. its not going to let you pump without paying in any circumstance.

only way to pump without paying is resetting the counter to 0 manually in the computer after you have pumped, while doing a post pump payment
stealth is gay and only for people who dont have escape plans
easier to just steal the gas normally if you have the resources to hack open terminals

Talking about gas stations or child support? 😆

Exactly. If your card doesn't have a balance that meets or exceeds the limit that the gas station has set, you get declined and can't pump

@CaptainFuggetaboutit @princess Just asking for the card imo counts as having to prove you have it.
Also others in the tread are saying it puts a hold on your card to check for money.

@matrix
What?! There are people that pay before buying gas? Those people are clearly freaks, and we should ostracize them.

@matrix you can do either. You can go inside and ask for a certain dollar amount on a pump or you can fill your car and pay afterwards.

@matrix Iirc though you have to insert your card before you start pumping so the transaction is gonna be there no matter what. There might be some gas stations that don't do it that way though because I've heard of people just not paying for gas. Idk, I don't drive.

@matrix How would paying before you pump work? I don't know how much fuel I need until I've finished filling up my car.

@parusmajor
Like pay for X amount of gas and then it let's you pump it

@matrix And if you pay for more gas than you can fit in your tank I assume you have to go back and get a refund for the remainder? Sounds like a PITA.

@parusmajor
I dunno. I just saw a picture of a pump with a terminal and with a sign that say to pay beforehand if you have cash.

@matrix The next town over there is a self-service pump with a with a clipboard on top where you jot down your name, number, time & date and how much you pumped. I can't even see any security cameras around the place.
