Do Americans pay for gas before or after they pump it?
@matrix depending on the type of card you use (debit/bank card or credit card) a temporary hold/charge is placed on the account to make sure you have enough to buy gas with and then it allows you to purchase the gas, adjusting the hold on your card to the amount that you pumped.
@milk
You guys are already a low trust society.
I've never seen a gas station like that. It's always you get the gas and then walk over to the cashier inside and pay.
@princess
I consider that before

@CaptainFuggetaboutit
Yeah, because you have to prove that you have the means to pay.
@princess
@CaptainFuggetaboutit @princess Just asking for the card imo counts as having to prove you have it.
Also others in the tread are saying it puts a hold on your card to check for money.
@matrix
What?! There are people that pay before buying gas? Those people are clearly freaks, and we should ostracize them.
@alyx
They apparently have to
@matrix Yes.
@sjw
It's over for you USBros ![]()
@matrix you can do either. You can go inside and ask for a certain dollar amount on a pump or you can fill your car and pay afterwards.
@matrix Iirc though you have to insert your card before you start pumping so the transaction is gonna be there no matter what. There might be some gas stations that don't do it that way though because I've heard of people just not paying for gas. Idk, I don't drive.
@parusmajor
Like pay for X amount of gas and then it let's you pump it
@parusmajor
I dunno. I just saw a picture of a pump with a terminal and with a sign that say to pay beforehand if you have cash.
