There was some 8chan post screencap (which I don't have) from someone claiming to have created most (if not all) of the wojack variants. Apparently, he was a furry artist and someone with enough money and autism commissioned all those wojak variants.

IRC was actually making a small comeback back in the early 2010s thanks to the rise of livestreaming (some of their chats were IRC), FOSS becoming somewhat more popular, and web developers realizing that it is easier just to host an IRC channel and embed it with a web client than it is to use some proprietary Flash, Java, or AJAX solution for a webchat/shoutbox. From what I've heard, Discord only got popular because Skype was down for awhile. People suggested Discord as a temporary alternative. It turned out to be better and the rest is history.

Last time, I checked, Epik doesn't allow imageboards anymore because of the multiple shootings linked to 8chan and because someone tried to report one bunker for CP, when in reality it was just loli.

Not to mention that owners of controversial communities feel the need to use DDoS protection these days and aren't aware that there are local solutions for those, so they end up using Cloudflare or any alternative. If things get any worse, we might see imageboards becoming a thing that you only see on the darkweb.

I'm actually concerned that something similar could happen to the fedi where a Christchurch situation happens and people become too afraid to host instances anymore while others start becoming more strict on blocking. I have a feeling that they are going to keep pushing these glowie-ops until we are all forced into walled-gardens.

@PhenomX6 A similar problem can be seen with the /agdg/ community, but on a much smaller scale.

Of course, /agdg/ users tend to be namefags (some even going as far as revealing their real names), but it is at least somewhat justified because you are just using imageboards to show off your game and you want to be known for your other games as well (assuming you will publish more than one game), otherwise people will simply call you <insert game title here>dev, and being a gamedev automatically makes you an e-celeb anyway. However, this has lead to some Reddit and Discord users shilling their games on /agdg/ threads which annoys some users. Though the opposite effect also happens as many /agdg/ users also feel the need to shill their games on Reddit and Discord, and even create communities for their games on said sites just so they can have a sizable audience, which pisses off many /v/ users because they feel like their fellow gamedevs are betraying them.

And of course, you have a lot of "normie" gamedevs hating imageboard users for political reasons because they have been indoctrinated by GDC, Extra Credits, their useless "game designer's" course in college, and the like. Luckily, I've never heard of a single /agdg/ dev being cancelled, but it wouldn't surprise me, especially given how pozzed itch.io is. The only thing preventing them from being cancelled is that their games are relatively obscure and most people, except for hardcore SJWs, don't bother searching their internet history.

Seriously, go find a non-imageboard gamedev community that isn't pozzed. I honestly wish there were more gamedevs on this side of fedi, but the only ones I know of besides myself are @beardalaxy, @Binkle, @nekofag, and @crunklord420.

@PhenomX6 8chan.moe's /fur/ seems to be (semi)-active. Fchan still exists along with tgfb.net, but I don't know what /fur/ or /furry/ thinks of those sites.

An imageboard for furries should be a no-brainer. I bet most furries want to be as anonymous as possible and there has to be some of them that realize that Telegram isn't actually private (that thing requires a mobile phone number for fucks sake).

@PhenomX6 Yeah looking back on it, 8chan being the Reddit of imageboards was a terrible idea. Just look at how Reddit killed forums.

Even before 8chan, you could find a lot of niche imageboards and textboards outside of 4chan. There was one for TF2 fans, Shrek fans, MLP fans, furries, drug-addicts, even one for train enthusiasts. Imageboards shouldn't be that difficult to host. Vichan is written in PHP so it should be possible to run on a shared host. The only issue you have to deal with is moderation.

The webring should've been the future of imageboards, but the user split, technical illiteracy, the fact that the imageboard software that supports the webring lacks certain features that 8chan had like certain markup options, drama between sites, and people wanting to go back to 8kun hoping it would be like 8chan mostly killed it. You even had sort of an equivalent to the fediblock culture you see on here where some site owners would blacklist other boards on their webrings for retarded reasons.

The webring is still around and some boards are still (semi)-active, but most of the active boards are on either zzzchan or anon.cafe, with Sportschan and AlogsSpace for sports and lolcow discussions respectively.
