@xianc78 @corfiot @PurpCat The kinds of sus ideologues that managed to take over the moderation of community sites and the kinds of sus ideologues that zerg-rushed the imageboards had completely opposing ideologies but managed to achieve the same goal: driving people into the arms of social media.

@WALFTEAM @PurpCat @Corfiot Yes and no. Forums are simple enough to be hosted on a shared hosting service, unlike Fediverse instances which are better off (or out right required) being hosted on a VPS. Even the most popular modern forum software, XenoForo is still written in PHP. And many hosts these days have autoinstallers for packages like phpBB and WordPress, so you don't need to learn things like SSH or FTP.

Granted, I have never actually hosted a forum (outside of testing forum software that I wrote myself almost a decade ago and have lost the source code to since), but I think the biggest problem that forum admins had to deal with is spam. I remember phpBB having the most basic captchas (if you can even call them that). It could be simple as clicking on a checkbox. And I remember back when Reddit was becoming more popular, the common argument of hosting their discussions on there over a forum was the spam issue.

Though, even with basic captchas, you can still handle the spam problem with an active moderation team, filtering out certain email domains (.biz domains are known for spam and abuse), among other things.

Other than that, you have to deal with eventually having to change servers or upgrade your hosting plan if your forum is popular for a long time. It's probably why most forums required you to upload images to a separate server like Photobucket instead of uploading images directly.

@Pawlicker I've been here for around a year (I think) and it's really starting to pop off.

The fedi is the future.

If you are afraid about the fedi becoming mainstream, just use twtxt for a more niche experience.

>Twitter locked viewing the damn site during HAPPENING in west, right as rumors swirl about Twitter not paying bills
>One of the largest JP instances has to close regs due to massive influx of new users, ask for money to boost to hold more users
>FB is using ActivityPub soon to make Twitter clone

You might not like this but IMO this is a larger change to the culture than Poa.st or musk buying Twitter. This is the moment when the fedi will truly boom IMO. The next year is going to be really fucking interesting.

I could barely ever read a book unless shit was constantly happening and didnt have full paragraph tangents describing useless shit like the way a character was dressed. But people reading something off, like in a yt vid? I can sit through a fucking lot. Read that shit to me im gettin COZY

I'm debating whether or not I should have silent credits because the credits sequence is so short, no matter how much I pad it out (I use a lot less stock assets this time).

So there's a really good reason why I am hosting Pleroma today on a Core 2 Duo:
During a much happier time on the internet, I knew a bunch of people who hosted Quake, CS, Mumble/TS, and other servers in their basement, closet, or under their bed.

While I could lament about the state of the modern phone obsessed nerd, instead I should point something else out: Twitter is dead and BlueSky is still invite only for what amounts to Napster as social media. What you can do is host a Pleroma instance using a server under your bed/in your closet/in the basement, and to add to that the server is literally a Core 2 Duo from 2008-9.

I will keep this server up for at least a month and upload a video tutorial, just to promote fediverse some more among nerds.

Today marks the 13-year anniversary of me fleeing from a campus while people were shot and killed.

I don’t talk about it much, but just wanted to drop a reminder that not all school-shooting “survivors” want the event or events like it used to take away essential freedoms.

@matrix SimCity 4 is all you ever need. People are still make mods for it to this very day.

Agent based simulation, coupled with the bad AI just turns the whole game into a traffic simulator and ruins the fun.

@admin @ArdainianRight @ChristiJunior @rasterman But they still believed in a government. Minarchists will never be libertarians.
