If you look at their new transparency report, they don't even offer descriptions anymore, and they comply more than they resist, so who knows what it truly going on.
ProtonMail has other flaws. For one, if you want to end-to-end encrypt your emails using PGP/GPG, you can't provide your own keys. ProtonMail generates them server side using your password. The only person who should have access to your private keys is you.
Mr_NutterButter is right that no email service is truly private as you can never know what they are truly doing unless you have physical access to the server, but I wouldn't trust ProtonMail just because of these two flaws.
My recommendation would be to use fedora.email which is run by @sjw (registrations are currently disabled but maybe you can PM him if you want an account) or posteo.de, which is a paid service (1 EUR/month and accepts cash-by-mail like Mullvad VPN) and allows third-party mail clients and using your own GPG keys.

Forks fucking rule, I'm happy to see this. Open source is crucial to the fediverse, and while we all might not agree on everything, it feels amazing to desire to work with forks
Y'all are the real winners, even more so when devs like me do the unthinkable and bring awareness to forks

well, well. we made it friends. through thick and thin and against a lot of people's wishes Poast is officially 3 years old.
what started out as a shitty mastodon server we somehow managed to convince 2000 people from twitter to join in the span of only a few hours on January 13, 2021 to over 30,000 strong today.
in three short years we managed to best every single challenge and hurdle thrown at us from brainlet dramanigger accusations to 0day exploits, news hit pieces and financial struggles we made it through all of it.
we are thankful that you have all stuck around despite everything, growing pains and all and we look forward to many more years here with you.

I think beliefs evolve just like biology. They introduce some justification for a morality, whether it's "don't commit infanticide" or "only marry one person" or "vaccines prevent disease" or "if you rape a girl you must marry her." Certain societies rise and some fail, and the mores of culture that doesn't die off tend to stick around and be thought of as good/correct (whether they really are, or just made the cut out of chance).

@gabriel I did enjoy his unique perspective. I can understand why he left, but I really didn't know what he thought replying to corporate accounts like Tutanota, Mozilla, and DuckDuckGo was supposed to accomplish.
