That's a good one. I'm calling it that for now on.

@freeschool @realcaseyrollins Mastodon, Pleroma, GNU Social, etc are more Twitter replacements and most people don't use Twitter unless they are celebrities, artists, businesses, organizations, activists, etc or they want to interact with them. Otherwise, there really isn't a point to using it.

It's not like Facebook where people just use it to interact with friends and family, and the FOSS/decentralized Facebook replacements like Diaspora are pretty much dead at this point. I will just stick to email and messaging apps for communication with friends and family. You could try to set up a Retroshare network for them, but I haven't tried that thing.

@realcaseyrollins @freeschool I tried to get my family to use Jetsi instead of Zoom, but my sister rejected it because she won't get to do the dance from the PBS Kids Show from the same name.

One thing that annoys me about #FOSS is that "the best software" is rarely the best for you.

There are some great #FOSS solutions for social apps but barely anybody uses them, so it gets hard to push for IRL friends to use them.

@beardalaxy Your high school/teenage years are kind of the worse time to work on personal projects, IMO because you don't realize how little you know about time management and the dedication it takes to work on them. I was making games back in high school too, but by my current standards, they look unfinished and broken. I even named them after their genres because they were all just practice games for something even bigger, which never happened.

My school didn't give that much homework (they were actually against that), but both of my parents were education advocates and wanted us to participate in extra-circular activities which while I enjoyed, drained me mentally.

@beardalaxy It's not like Phantasy Star unless in incorporates both science AND magic.

@beardalaxy The faux-3D dungeons are just like those faux-3D games were you just see a static, first-person image of your field of view, depending on what kind of tile you are on. The only difference is that they added an animation when moving from tile to tile instead of just showing the next image. Later games dropped it, which was for the better IMO as this method was limited to maze-like dungeons.

I remember someone trying to make a Phantasy Star V in RPG Maker but I don't think the person went anywhere with that. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a fanmade Phantasy Star V that was ever finished. The series (and I'm talking about the original series) doesn't have the same devotion as something like Earthbound where a group of people would literally spend a decade and a half making a fan-sequel that later became a spiritual successor.

I have something planned that is similar to the original Phantasy Star games, but it's not a spiritual successor because it's a Zelda clone. Also, the cast will all be aliens instead of future humans or humans from another planet. It will be Phantasy Star inspired only by the science fantasy setting.

@beardalaxy Are you talking about the pseudo-3D dungeons? I'm just talking about the science fantasy setting.

@ArdainianRight @hachi Why do they always compare their dead-end sexualities and dysphoric identities to hand preferences?

@djsumdog @PurpCat As a gamedev you only need to include LAN multiplayer as anyone can play LAN games online through VPN/tunneling software, thus making the game support both.

If your cooking site isn't printer friendly, then it is not worth using.

@SuperSnekFriend @greentext It really is. I've seen Discord servers with barely any activity these days when I look for where people talk about a topic, the chrultrabook Discord (as an example) migrated the fuck off Discord to forums. It doesn't help that there's a growing backlash against Discord communities being the hub of discussion due to being unsearchable or unarchivable without a special tool (and people get sketched if you do this).

There's literally only one Discord community I know stuck on it that I actively use as well (for an obscure Japanese computer), and it's only because the server unfortunately has years of information and community activity buried in it. Outside the English community, the larger Japanese one prefers Twitter and some BBS threads.

Outside the USA, many people prefer Telegram groups for things as well.

when you show people a thing and they know you made it: :blobcatadorable: yes very nice

the same thing when you say look at this thing i found on the internet: :neocat_yeet: whoever drew that is a fart balloon

@PurpCat @greentext @marlin @SuperSnekFriend I remember non-Windows keyboards having the flower-shaped symbol as the command key. Both Classic Mac keyboards and those AlphaSmart e-writers had that. However, the System76 laptop that I'm using right now has this weird symbol where it's just a rectangle surrounded by two bars.

I wish instead of making Earthbound-inspired RPGs, indies would make RPGs similar to the original Phantasy Star games.
