Dumb question: Why do you have to change the oil filter every oil change?

Is there something it's actually picking up? AFAIK the oil needs to be changed because of sludge and acid buildup, and the filter only traps grit and metal shavings. But if you have enough grit and metal shavings to actually clog the filter, your engine is already toast.

Anyone know anything about this?
