>also anticipate Wii games are going to shoot up in price soon too, they already have to a certain extent.
Wii games shot up in price back during quarantine. I guess people tend to feel nostalgic during extreme boredom and isolation, or it's just those who weren't lucky enough to get Ring Fit Adventures for the Switch and were looking for an exercise game. Right now, it seems like 6th gen consoles are the ones people want to go back to as kids who grew up with them are now adults. I think we need to wait a few years until it's the same with the 7th gen (possibly even more because it lasted much longer).

@indigo @coyote @coolboymew The Wii is outlasting the PS2 now, but I doubt it's going to be around for much longer. I think Nintendo only kept it alive because the Wii U wasn't doing well and the Wii was obviously insanely popular. But with the recent success with the Switch, I don't see any justifications for keeping it alive at this point. I'm pretty sure the homebrew community will continue making games for it if there is a demand.

@mystik @ChristiJunior @thestrongest @ArdanianRight @ethot You don't have to use those things. It's probably easier not to use those frameworks if you are just making a basic website.

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote There's also Let's Sing and re-releases of Retro City Rampage. Just checking the Wikipedia list, it seems like only Australia and parts of Asia are getting new releases. The strangest being Spongebob Truth or Square since that's a tie-in for a ten year old TV special. I guess it's a budgeted re-release or something like that.

@mystik @ChristiJunior @ArdanianRight @thestrongest @ethot I just want the Internet to go back to how it was pre-2010s when people actually went to websites and not just social media pages. It was much better that way.

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote You could probably say the same with the original Wii though. Most recent release was back in July 2020. I don't know why it's still being supported. Most of them have probably been collecting dust for years in people's closets.

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote It just goes to show that Nintendo would go out of their way to stop piracy and homebrew even on their obsolete consoles.

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote I heard Nintendo tried to update the Wii U a while back just to stop piracy even though they were supposed to be done with updates on that system.

@ChristiJunior @ArdanianRight @ethot @mystik @thestrongest If only Trump was smart enough to use decentralized alternatives like the Fedi we could see decentralization become mainstream.

I heard that they had some very strict file size limit, but that was understandable given the limited amount of internal storage the Wii had, so it's no big surprise that most of it was shovelware trash, but it was really cool to see Nintendo opening up to indies years before the whole indie craze happened in the early 2010s.

>I used to pirate Wiiware games for the heck of it
Oh yeah. I also regret not modding it, but it was my family's console and I didn't want to brick it. The Wii seemed to have one of the most vibrant homebrew scenes, maybe besides the PSP, DS, and Dreamcast.

>The Wii truly was the last bastion of mid-tier games made by big devs. The console has a shitload of fantastic gems like this that was generally ignored by the big press back then during the dumb AAA gold rush
Too bad most of it was buried under a mountain of shovelware, but that's a guarantee for any insanely popular console. However, I think the Wii was more egregious since it has the motion control gimmick, so every no-name casual dev was throwing everything they can at it just to see what would stick.

I agree that the Wii was the last bastion of mid-tier gaming though. It probably helps that it was on a technical level of the sixth generation of consoles (the last good console generation), and despite being the first Nintendo console with a somewhat in-depth online, it wasn't a victim of the cancers that came with it like microtransactions.

My biggest regret with the system was not buying anything off the Wii Shop Channel because the VC was never good since. Plus, there are clearly some hidden gems on WiiWare that are never brought up.
