@beardalaxy I use Cryptpad which is like a FOSS, self-hosted, and end-to-end encrypted Google Drive. There is currently no desktop app, but everything is encrypted and decrypted client-side so even if you are using someone else's server, they have no idea what you are doing. It also has real-time code editing which prevents version conflict.

@beardalaxy And I'm obviously not opposed to using private repositories as you need to collaborate with other people in your studio, but that can easily be done on a self-hosted server and I plan on using Fossil for that.

@beardalaxy Honestly, I feel like public code repositories should only be used if you plan on collaborating. Instead, they are used as code dumping grounds used to build CVs/portfolios. I feel like that's a complete waste or as Terry Davis would say, "littering the Internet."

Who I met a SEGE 2026 pt2
LGR was at the convention! I should’ve figured he’d be there given he’s somewhat near the area. We chatted about the hurricane recovery we endured & expressed how glad to hear he’s back on his feet. Even touched the wood grain 486. Got a selfie & a cool sticker for my gaming PC. Clint’s a pretty chill dude. 👍 #gamer #gaming #videogames #vidyagames #retrogaming

fun fact GNU/Taler is now banned from Codeberg, technically.

Not because Taler does anything wrong, but because Codebergers are fundamentally stupid people who don't understand "proof of work" is not the entire field of crypto. (Taler in particular was entirely designed by groups to be as legal and upstanding as possible.)

@cnx I agree and respect their right to do so, but there aren't that many alternatives right now. That's my only gripe.

@subnetter @xianc78 the politics is just general baseball at this point. FSF did a really bad job communicating the point (armoring the commons from capture, anti-enclosure) and the corpos have done a great job defanging it (RMS is problematic guys, only solution is MIT licenses [and not armoring the commons against us anymore guys] :drgn__w_:) and the left wingers would rather purity spiral in to irrelevance than commit to popper (the actual popper position which requires tolerating unpopular arguments that haven't escalated to direct system hostilities) so uh.

:comfystoner: idk

@icedquinn Google is probably a CIA creation so even the free-market libertarians should oppose it's existence.

@icedquinn The term "libertarian" has evolved over the years. In fact, when the word was first coined, it was strictly a philosophical term and had nothing to do with politics whatsoever. It basically had to deal with the whole "does free will exist" question. These days, it just means if you believe in negative liberty.

@icedquinn I've toned down on my political rhetoric in recent years because I realized that talking about politics publicly all the time is a quick way to become a lolcow and/or get stalked by feds.

Honestly this shit is why my first commercial game has no code repository of any kind and why that might be the official policy of my studio. Our games are FOSS as in you are free to share and/or modify the code, but we don't accept any collaboration with the outside world. I'm sick of the drama of the FOSS community and I don't want Ioncom to be a part of it.

@icedquinn I saw a little left-wing bias in them, but I didn't see them as a problem. I thought they would be okay with someone who would be considered moderately right-wing like me, as long as I don't talk about idpol, but apparently not.

@icedquinn Codeberg seemed like the least political out of all the GitHub alternatives (besides GitLab), but over time, that became less and less the case. They always had a ban on the promotion of National Socialism, but at least that has a clear definition.

@xianc78 > https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/Community/issues/2184
> the entire offchute thread is just the "everything is political" copes

this is, largely, why i took so goddamn long to ever make a codeberg account at all.

It looks like Codeberg just banned all cryptocurrency related projects, but it was to be expected, given the CEOs relation with Drew DeVault and them taking more far-left stances as of late.

I guess there is simply no viable alternative to GitHub unless you self-host. Maybe the Git-over-Nostr solutions would take off, but I am sick and tired of people bringing unrelated politics into the FOSS movement.
