SOPA's back and 10 times worse!
For those who don't remember The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was a proposed U.S. congressional bill from 2011 that would have brought censorship and site blocking to the United States. It was defeated, but since then the entertainment cartels have gotten similar bills passed in other countries. These bills undermine free speech and democracy.
Now the cartels are at it again with a number of new bills in the United States with even more rigor.
One of these new U.S. site blocking bills adds VPNs to the list of blocking intermediaries.
Now it appears the bill is very specific to virtual private networks and does not explicitly include SOCKS proxies, Tor, or other generic proxy services. That does then beg the question though of why bother? If it's not all inclusive it won't work. It also won't work against non-US jurisdiction based VPN operators. That also means it undermines the VPN operators which are based out of the United States.
How effective can this VPN specific section be? Not very, but there ends up being real harm.
It also still has serious implications for democracy in America if censorship and site blocks are permitted.
I will be the first to argue we've already headed down that dangerous path with the US "justice department" seizing domain names. There is this concept in law known as prior restraint. They're not support to censor speech before it occurs and they certainly shouldn't be taking away someone's ability to speak even if they seize the servers themselves.
Have you written your congress critter yet? I have and I'll write the evil **** again and again and hope for independence for New Hampshire and a collapse of the US. Governments that censor should collapse.

It's like I can never make a platforming game, despite the genre being so popular and being able to learn a lot from the experience.
@gabriel Psyop or not, it did get people to obsess over politics to a very unhealthy degree (myself included) and did destroy a lot of Internet communities, so I will always look at the thing negatively. I was only suckered into it because the hobbies I were into were suckered into it and everyone had the mentality of "everyone is the enemy unless proven otherwise, so you might as well pick a side".
I wished it never happened. My life would be so much better if it didn't (though I argue that COVID was 1000x worse than the culture war).
I'll leave the possibility that it DID happen organically, but only in niche blogs/forums and maybe politicians and CEOs discovered that they could take advantage of it by bringing it to the mainstream.
But either way, I feel like that it has gotten to the point that even if you did get rid of the top of the pyramid, people would still be fighting over these issues and I don't know the best way to address it, at least a way that pleases most people.
I hate Dr. Bronner products. I don't care if they are the most organic soaps/shampoos/toothpastes on the market. Their toothpastes leave a very nasty aftertaste and their soaps give you old woman smells. Stick to Everyman Jack for shampoos and Hello Toothpastes for toothpastes (or just use baking soda + essential oils). Don't waste your money on this hippy garbage that makes you smell like shit.
@TechLibre
Operating the controls on a runaway train to attempt to slow it down may be futile, but it is not consenting to or endorsing the likely derailment and crash. I hate this argument.
