The inventor of the first helicopter, Igor Sikorsky, in the Sikorsky H-5 helicopter, 1945.

I love how even after a year and a half and connecting to every relay under the sun, I'm apparently still the only gamedev on Nostr besides a couple of people literally employed at Unity of all places.

I know a lot of people here hate the Nostr protocol, but I do like some of the advantages because I really think the whole fediblock culture is the Fediverse's fundamental flaw and that thing is virtually non-existent on Nostr. As long as you are conntected to at least one node that someone else is connected to, you can't talk to them. People have to judge users on an individual basis and not just block entire instances over bullshit drama.

But alas, even after some time, most people there have little interest in discussing anything other than Bitcoin. Even the user groups I lurked seem inactive. And no, I don't think the crypto integration is the problem here. I even lurked actual blockchain based social networks like Bastyon and even they are willing to talk about other things.

People are rushing in to nit-pick that telegram isn't a secure messager (it isn't) and that it's filled with spam/junk (it is) but there's an important truth to what you're saying.

E2EE isn't an end to itself, it's a means to privacy outside third-party control. The EU (and many other governments) have made it explicitly clear they view any and all communications they can't monitor control or shut down are a problem.

You don't have to like Telegram or durov to see this as a troubling sign within a broader pattern that is only hard to see when ones wishes not to see.

An Example of Option A that I liked: Super Paper Mario spoilers

@beardalaxy @Mr_NutterButter Once you beat the main story, there's a permanent change done that I enjoy seeing in video games. There's the whole process of getting Tiptron, and there's some extra flavor text to some of Tippi's tattles like with Francis. The entire world of Chapter 6 is no longer a blank void and also has some interesting stuff there. This kind of backtracking based on the game's story is what I'd like to see more of for any game with ending choice Option A.

@berkberkman @Mr_NutterButter I'm asking for my game's development. In that context, the New Game Plus would mean you can start from scratch with your character and party build, and make different choices along the story to see new scenes play out. Those would be the two main things you'd get out of it. The fact you get to keep your level and are given gear obtainable only by beating the game would essentially just make a second playthrough easier if you wanted to see absolutely everything.

For option A, it would be for finishing up anything you missed and there is the potential to get different endings without having to replay the entire game. You might not be able to get every ending from that point, depending on how much you've already done, but you can change it quite a bit. There are some secrets to hunt for too that might be easier if you're going back to before the ending instead of starting a new game. Though, if you're taking a different route with your new game, you might find things you wouldn't have thought of otherwise!

The game is about 25 hours long for an average playthrough. I did about 2/3 of the raw content in my first full one and it clocked in at about 27 hours. Personally, I would probably want to be kicked back out to the overworld instead of starting a new game with beefy characters, but I'm not really one to play games twice very often anyway so I wanted to get some other perspectives.

@beardalaxy I have mixed feelings with both, but if there's a special bonus/true/secret ending for either one, I'd go with Option A for the sake of finishing those necessary side tasks that I might've missed. Option B is fine only if there's a significant spin done to the gameplay and the story. Otherwise, replaying the whole long campaign all over again would just be mundane for me.

If you're playing an open world RPG, which one of these would you prefer happens once you beat the game?

A) You're able to go back to before the ending and continue playing in the state the game world was in before finishing the game.

B) You're able to carry over your party level when you start a New Game.

In both scenarios, you get some extra gear for beating the game.

Would love to hear thoughts on this!

I read The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle (1957)

A fast and fun sci-fi mystery about a fuckin' cloud from fuckin' outer space. Excellent pacing, not too long. A page turner. Nothing too crazy, but in the context of 1957 it seems very modern.

Fun fact the author was a steady state theorist and disses big bang theory in the book.

Just finished Metroid Prime 1 for the first time (Wii version).
I first played this game on the Gamecube when I was about 13. I could never get past the Omega Pirate.
Good game. I think it's admirable that despite the change to a first person shooter presentation it's still very unmistakably a Metroid game.
Finishing a game you couldn't finish as a kid is a very uniquely fulfilling experience, I don't have that many left at this point, so it's becoming an increasingly rare one for me...

This week we visited Le Redoutable (former nuclear submarine), and inside was this very cute computer-looking thing, with pdp11-like switches.

Thing is, trying to ddg it didn't yield anything, the manufacturer itself (Sintra ?) doesn't even have a wikipedia page, let alone for this specific model.

Does this ring any bells with anyone here? Especially with French retrocomputing nerd?
