I think this gets into the "victim as virtue" idea. I remember Helen Dale (Australian lawyer/author) talking about how Roman society didn't have a concept for virtue in victimization. Works like the Book of Job didn't really resonate in Roman society. Dales makes the argument Romans didn't believe in refinement through trial, although I question that stance since they did have The Odyssey and other popular works/theater that fit the standard heroes journey.

If Christianity was the moving force that pushed the idea of virtuous persecutions (e.g. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven."), it would make sense that people would eventually seek out persecution as a means of increasing their virtue.

Some people plug their ears and go "nah nah nah" and keep believing a story they literally know nothing about except what the TV told them about it. They immediately demonize anyone who contractions their ideological head-cannon.
